Man, y'all have certainly given this much more thought than I have. After reading all of your posts, I'm still undecided on what to do. Dang near every suggestion has some merit, so I just need to work out which way to go here and get the project going. I'll certainly keep y'all posted on what happens.

Thank you for all of your suggestions!

 It is? Man, I thought the answer was "42".

....atleast that's what the big hunk of junk computer "Deep Thought" said it was.

Hey Gary in my unprofessional opinion. I'm for the model display. I've seen the NMUSAF's and it's quite impressive. Not only does it serve for layout planning but also serves kinda like a 3d map to the visitors. And makes for a nice display in general. Another I saw years ago back when it was still the USAF museum was a model diorama of Shoo Shoo in a hangar at Dover AFB during restoration, it was quite nice and was displayed next to Shoo Shoo. These days it has disappeared off into the anals of the museums deep storage.

Just think of it as another way for the CAF to get involved with it public.

One thought though, the NMUSAF's models are white (not sure if gloss or flat). Flat black always looks nice at first but after awhile greasy finger prints show up all over the place.

Fascinating thread. (Is there a link to it off the Modeling forum too in case?)

I like the idea of the all-black models, as it evokes the origins of 1:72 constant-scale model production, the WWII silhouette-recognition models. Perhaps some of those could be displayed along with the hangar 3D schematic? I have one of the silhouette models, albeit a postwar example...it is, of all things, a Petlyakov Pe8 four-engined bomber, bought many years ago in a local diecast-car shop (long since closed).

It will be interesting, too, to see how some of these subjects get rendered in 1:72, with kits in that scale being either rare or nonexistent. When I did my "Project Walt" diorama of a piece of the Walt Soplata collection, my requisite Vultee BT-15 was cobbled together from parts of a Testors T-6G, an Academy P-40B, and a 1:120 or so Russian Yak-40 STOL airliner kit!

It'd be cool to see pix of this project posted as it comes together...

S.

Hey buddy, the Shoo SHoo Baby dio went to the Dover AFB museum, since they did the restoration. Also the models are painted a base color of whatever the real aircraft is. So a B-36 is all silver, while the B-2 is all black, and so on.

Hmm.....I thought they were all white.

Alas my poor memory

The 1/72 suggestion seems to have quite a bit of merit, as well as the 1/144. However, unless models of certain aircraft are able to have foldable wings, there may the the possibility of having to have two models of certain types (or am I already mentioning something that's been mentioned at least twice before?)

And the suggestion of a "working diorama" that not only assists both Gary and Mark in positioning, but gives the visiting public a "pre-brief", as it were, as to what to expect when they come in to the hangar, is an excellent idea. (Keep it behind Lexan rather than glass, tho...). With all of the civic events that take place in the hangar, it'd make a lot of "will it fit?" decisions a lot easier.

..Hmmmm.....Has anyone noticed that Gary's aircraft keep getting smaller and smaller? From the B-29, to the B-24, to the (quantum leap here) Formula 1, to 1/72???

Well i say it would be alot more space efficent to make the squadron in 1/144th scale but then again im not very biased on this disscussion.

1/144th is the best! Im already doin ole 927! And yes there has been ssome work to it!

Gary, in my experience the models will work best. It wil give you a much better picture in your mind for overlaps and angles once you're out there on the tug. I don't think the computer version will be as effective in that department.

It will also give you a much clearer picture of how close you will need to be when you are up against the hangar walls, beams, braces, etc...

Haven't seen it, but I'll see what I can do!

BDK
The model layout at POF used to be in one of the "secret rooms" in the old wooden "Jets and Air Racing" hangar before they moved to the new facility. I don't know where they moved it after they moved out.

I'm sorry for the delay, y'all. It looks like we'll probably end up going with the 1/72 scale model route. HOWEVER, before I press on, I'm going to get my act together and get a display stand and storage bins set up for the models before I start requesting the models from those who wish to donate.

I am terribly sorry for not being prepared for my own request. I'll be sure to let y'all know when I get ready to move forward.

Gary, if the models are a go, please post a revised list of what is still needed. It will give me a chance to get back into my AC stack and build one.

An all Black Ops SQD for Gary, that would be a fun time playing with all the toys.....
