Re: EF-82B to go on display in full night fighter configuration

I personally think it's pretty cool that it will be painted black, when most folks think of an P-82 they think of the black nightfighter.
And an added bonus, there will be no distracting tramp stamp.

Every time I see those old shots of it from Lackland I imagine some airman rummaging through a box of stencils and grumbling about who stole the letter "A" ...

These are listed in the NMUSAF archive as P-82C's. Is this correct?

Yep, the only C model, according to Baugher's web site. http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1944_4.html

44-65169 was built as a P-82B and was converted as the night fighter prototype complete with radar pod.
The production night fighters were the Allison-engined P-82F/F-82F.

I don't have any photos as old as John's. Some oldish photos of the preserved planes here though:

Well, yes and no.

Indeed, 44-65169 was the sole P-82C, but it mounted an early version of the SCR-720 system in the pod.

It was 44-65170, the sole P-82D, that mounted the APS-4 system in the pod, and thus served as the radar systems prototype for the P-82F production series. Of course, Allisons powered everything after the P-82B/C/D.

The P-/F-82G, the unanticipated "hero" of the opening rounds of the Korean Air War, mounted the SCR-720C system.

That red tail is interesting. I've not seen that one before. Neat.

I like this scheme too.
