The photo of Corsair 122 that shows aircraft numbers 269 is very interesting.

On Marine Corps aircraft during WWII aircraft numbers were assigned by squadrons and the style and location of the numbers were unique to each squadron and were not based on the aircraft bureau numbers. The bold block numbers 269 located behind the cowling were used by VMF-224 in 1944 and early 1945. The block numbers 122 on the engine cover were used by VMF-111 during the same period. Both squadrons were part of MAG-31 based in the Marshall Islands in 1944 and early 1945. In 1945 MAG-31 would move to Okinawa. VMF-224 was based on Roi-Namur, VMF-111 was based on Majuro and MAG-31 HQ was on Kwajalein. It was common to transfer aircraft between squadrons.

I have a photo of a F4U assigned to VMF-224 in 1944 with the aircraft identification number 269 taken on Roi-Namur. The only way to confirm that that this is the same aircraft would be to compare the bureau numbers to see if they match. I can post the photo of 269 if someone can tell me how to up-load a photo.

VMF224HG:

Good day!

Tks for the comments & info on aircraft "122"* for now. There is another # below the "122" poss 813 also. Do you have any ideas where the last one comes from?

p.s This particular aircraft came back to the US for exhibition purposes, c. 1945-46. There was an earlier post with a B/W of "122" at CT F4U factory open house in Wix sometime before. The sample at the CT factory had a diff set of markings also. Do you have any idea of the whereabouts of the CT F4U?

*edited

Mark/F4U folks:

Good day!

Tks for the interesting pics of F4U "122"* & the pilot that flew 89 missions in it! There should be a movie about Cpt. Bill Magill & his aircraft!

p.s The original "122" had an oil leak after a raid in the Pacific & had to land in another inland nearby to survive. One of your pics shows some 100+ missions on this aircraft & that prob explains the diff engine cowlings numbers. It was prob recovered from the inland with a new engine. The pilot comments that he was given another aircraft but made no comments on the whereabouts of the original "122". We'll dig some more.

*edited. Tks

p.s Tks in advance

Looks like a pretty standard, mill-run mid-production F4U-4.

I noticed in quoting the picture that it's tagged as an F4U-7, but it's not, it's a -4.

Tks! I agree F4U something! Poss at a Navy or Marine base getting ready for an open house. Pretty neat picture of a factory fresh F4U!

p.s You can see his cousin "896" on pg one tks to Mark. Notice the diff type of font on the Buno #s.

It could be 96898, or the "898" could be a construction number, or it might not have anything to do with anything.

Rob/Richard:

Interesting details of a poss F4U-Test aircraft! Tks .So we are looking at a -4 with -5 engine cowling panels! Would luv to see the tail close-ups of those -5 test aircraft.

p.s In addition, F4U-4s Buno 97361 & 80764 were also used as test bed/ mods for the F4U-5N upcoming models!! c. Aug 1946. Anyone with access to the files of NATC Patuxent River NAS F4U-5/N aircraft Test aircraft files welcome aboard also!!

It's also got 6x.50 guns instead of 20mm, and F4U-4 mid-production canopy instead of the raised -4 type.

Interesting Corsair! I've never seen that one before!
