Members approve CAF move!

It says the CAF will build a museum. That is not the same as moving the existing one. Considering that every CAF wing is a museum in itself as well, it would make sense that the new Superbase would be a museum too.

Hate to see it leave Midland, but a large metropolitan area such as DFW with a rich aviation history is a great place for it to move to. Was hoping for Alliance in Fort Worth, but this makes sense. Wonder if the DFW wing in Lancaster will stay there....

I won't speak for them, but they own the current hangar they're in, so that's a lot to ask to move. Also, Executive is a towered airport and I know a lot of the guys at the DFW wing appreciate not having one. Not that they're against having one or do anything unsafe without it, but the air traffic level lends itself to be much easier to get in and out of LNC with the minimum of fuss because when, for example the R4D is leaving, it kinda owns the airport and they can do what they need to do wherever without worrying about blocking anyone or having tower tell them what to do where.

My prediction is that everything will eventually leave Midland. (Other than the High Sky Wing.) So now I'm wondering folks. Just how "permanent" the word will be for Dallas, since we used the word "permanent" for Midland 20 years ago. Just sayin!'

Now that the decision has been made, best wishes to the CAF for a successful move and future. I hope they are able to absorb the possible short-term financial hit and are able to sustain a long-term plan for success in a larger market. These places have to make some money to stay open and continue preserving and flying the aircraft we love. Here's hoping the CAF finds that in Dallas. It sounds like the Airpower History tour and some of the other tours have been successful. I hope these continue to be a part of the long-term vision of the organization.

Question for those in the know: does this mean that smaller CAF wings may be consolidated into this national airbase? Just curious. If they're planning to have they type of aircraft display some of the articles I've read have alluded to, it seems that some wings may need merge into a larger wing based at headquarters. I've seen specific reference to the B-29 and B-24 being based at the new headquarters. How many other flying aircraft are typically housed at headquarters in Midland? I see on the AAHM website that exhibits change due to maintenance schedules, but I wonder if there might be a plan for more permanent displays at the new headquarters.

Just curious. This may have been covered in other threads, but I truthfully don't read CAF politics that closely. Anywho, best of luck to everyone involved with the new move!

You know I think that part of the problem is using the term "permanent." It is kind of bad expectation setting. Almost everything is temporary, even if it exists for a long time. It is sort of like at my work we have been going through a lot of changes and everyone gets their feathers ruffled when they hire the "interim" director of such and such. As far as I am concerned you may as well put "interim" in front of everything because at some point, everything changes.

The conceptual art looks like a lot more than the "front office" making the move. I hope it works out for the whole organization. I suppose a sleepy airfield in the middle of nowhere with a homey atmosphere, a place to bust knuckles on airplanes and fly when and how you feel is every mans dream...but "no bucks, no Buck Rogers" as the saying goes. I'm guessing the thinking is; get more foot traffic = getting more funding.

HQ is moving in to start, the location has always been billed as an Airbase with a museum and attraction in addition to the HQ, that's nothing new. I think that Stephan was quite candid on exactly what the plans are for Dallas and Midland in the previously linked Warbird Radio interview. As he said, almost every wing has a museum of some level attached to it already and the "National Airbase" at Redbird isn't the first airbase under the new scheme anyway since the Arizona Wing has already transitioned to Airbase Arizona.
