Re: A few new PB4Y-2 pics

The above referenced photo of the Privateer illustrated in both Doll's and Larkin's book is a full fledged PB4Y-2. It is characterized by a Erco nose turret, Erco waist turrets, Martin top-turret, Motor Products tail turret, tri-color paint scheme and the word MARINES painted on the vertical tail.

Can anyone reach Mr. Doll? Perhaps he could post the photo.

Visited the NMNA museum today and they have done more work on the PB2Y-2 Privateer’s ERCO turrets. The people at the museum say they need any ERCO turret parts that anyone is willing to give up. Still no funds for the re-paint of the aircraft; so NO NOSE ART yet. Here are a few pictures of the Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns installed in an ERCO waist blister. Man those gunners had to be small in stature.
Cheers

After a few phone calls with Bill and Hal Olsen ( ), I just sent an email off to the NNAM urging them to consider getting Hal Olsen involved in their PB4Y-2 restoration project. If anyone else is so inclined, I'm sure it would help to get their attention

ACarey and a few others were also inclined to send in emails.
I got a response yesterday from Hill Goodspeed at the NNAM.
See below:
"Thank you for your email regarding nose art on the PB4Y-2 Privateer displayed here at the museum. As you mention, the aircraft is currently in rework and though there are no current plans to add nose art to it, the museum director will make a final determination when the rework is nearing completion. Thank you for your support of the museum and your service in the Navy."
At least they are going to think about. So, keep those emails going if you also support some kind of nose art for the NNAM’s Privateer.

There may be more but I am pretty sure that these forty-one are his. I to hope that Hal Olson will be able to paint some nose art on the NMNA's Privateer.

Boy, you ain't kidding about that! I have tried each of the PB4Y turrets on for size at LSFM, and could baaarely squeeze my big @$$ in -- all 5'-5" x 160 lbs of me! The worst of them was the Erco nose ball; you need a hinge in your spine for it to work...... :?

Y'all be sure to take lots of pictures of those waist blister while you still can. After the last flurry of posts on this thread I went to LSFM specifically to get pics of theirs as installed, and it's simply too dang tight to get more than just a portion of anything in any one frame. They all came out so bad I never even tried to clean 'em up and post.

Django I will forward you the email address when I get home via PM.

Work is progressing slowly on the PB4Y-2 at the NNAM but the staff has done a great job on the tail turret.

(Snort...spewing coffee on computer! ) Well I hope Mr. Olsen is still with us by the time NNAM makes up their mind.

I had the same experience as Pogo at LSFM. I was told to stay out of the waist turrets, the tail turret looks like it was made for someone four feet tall and I couldnt get the nose turret door open. The top turrets are still sitting on stands on the floor and I haven't messed with them since I cant fit in a Martin turret anyway.

I think every type of bomber that served in WWII had at least one example named "Pistol Packin' Mama."

I shot this one from across the ramp as we were leaving Casa Grande last weekend. This thing restored to military configuration and operating in dark blue Navy paint would be spectacular.

Ah yes it would, but the question is, would you replace the installed B-25 2600's for the less powerful 1830's that she had on during the war? A sacrifice of power for authenticity. Not to mention installing the Bombay again. Anyone have any photos of the inside of one of the fire bombers? Is the bombay still installed? Just covered over? Or will they need to put the plane in a jig and essentially install a new bombay in? Similar as to what the CAF will have to do to finally make there B-24 a full B-24.

I probably would put the 1830's back on were it mine to do with what I please. I'm guessing (and only guessing mind you) that at the reduced weights that it would be operating at compared to full combat configuration the 1830's would provide adequate power.
