No argument there. The side discussion on radio technique is just that, a side discussion, with little bearing on the outcome of this.

We have a long standing mantra in the Herk community to "Have fun, follow the rules, don't damage anything, and don't hurt anyone." If you need to drop fun to accomplish the others, fine. If you need to drop fun and the rules to do the last two, fine. And so on.

With ATC, the only maneuver I do better than "standby" is "disregard".

Was on a flight from DET to ATL earlier this week and the guy next to me had a series of photos showing the entire incident from the turn to final onward. Shows the right wing tip impacting first - the photographer must have kept his/her finger on the button for the whole event. He e-mailed them to me but they are not my photos so I am not sure I can post (or if anyone wants me to).

I remember a pretty big dust-up about posting someone else's photos a couple of years ago.

I would like to see them, as they might give us more insight into what happened. Definitely get his permission before you post them. I hope he gave copies to the NTSB for their investigation.

OK - will try. I'm in Colombia this week so it may take me a while. Took me 2 days just to get my wireless running.

Roush is flying again, but this time with a co-pilot. It might not be a bad idea to make that a permanent thing, in light of Roush's propensity to get himself in trouble.

http://aero-news.net/index.cfm?ContentB ... 0dfcb2b96&

From the article, I found this blurb interesting:

"Multiple media sources including Fox News and the Hampton Roads Pilot report that Roush said he 'wasn't doing anything reckless' in either accident in which he has been involved. 'I simply got into a situation both times where I had no margin and something happened that was a sure enough accident that followed.' "

Um, isn't "reckless" a situation where one has no margin for error?

From the NTSB website, here is a synopsis of Jack's first crash from 2002:

http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_i ... 0588&key=1

From the above brief:

"The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
the pilot-in-commands decision to fly at a low altitude and his improper visual lookout resulting in an in-flight collision static with wires."

One could argue that the above action was indeed "reckless", especially since he violated an FAR in this case.

Regardless, even though he is not accepting personal responsibility for his actions, I still wish him a successful return to aviation and hopefully something can be done down the road to help his vision.

For his sake, for racing's sake, and the warbird movements' sake, I really, really hope Jack is more careful in his flying now. Let's hope the third time is NOT a charm!

I was at the Richmond Air Guard 400 over the weekend. Met with the "Cat in the Hat" after the race.

Jack was in good spirits and happy to meet with me and my friend (both USAF retirees). We told Jack how much the we & the warbird community were happy to see his recovery from the crash. Jack was grateful to have friends and well wishers in not only Nascar but his warbird world as well.

He spoke of flying & said he approaches every flight in the P-51 cautiously and methodically. Every time he goes up in the Mustang he is super vigilant. He expressed a bit of anger at himself and the situation he got into at Oshkosh. We left it at that. It would have been ill mannered to talk about it any longer.

We switched back to racing. A pretty good year for the organization, not for wins but they have been in the hunt all year. It's a big improvement over last year. Jack was very happy to get Carl, Matt and Greg into the chase.

I hope he does well, he is really nice man and a hell of an engineer.

I noted here a few weeks ago that I have some photos of the incident that I haven't seen published anywhere else so far. I got them from a guy I met on an airplane who was at least three times removed from the original author of the e-mail. I have had no luck contacting anyone who knows the photographer. At what point do I decide that he/she wouldn't care and I can post them here? Moderator opinion will be accepted as gospel of course.

OK - hearing no response, maybe I can force the issue. This is the first of a series of 15 photos taken by someone standing about midfield on the day of the incident. He/she must have had their camera set for continuous fire as they appear to be at about 5 second intervals and they end after the jet came to rest. I haven't seen these on any other forum yet but obviously I don't subscribe to all of them.

I didn't take the pictures and I have been unable to find out who did. I post this first one here because:

It is pretty tame
I do not plan to try to make any money or win any contests with these
Maybe if they haven't been seen by the NTSB (doubtful) yet they might now

I'll post the rest if consensus says I should.

[Edit] My personal opinion is that once someone sends out a bunch of photos in an uncontrolled e-mail, they still own them but they lose the right to say no one else can pass them around.

So how bad of a scumbag does this make me?
