Upon further review, I couldn't find any missions from either Australia or Henderson Field in the first part of October that have any mention of any shoot downs nearing 23 enemy planes.
Mostly what I learned from this book was spare parts were very hard to come by and many planes were unable to make missions due to maintenance issue. Also, unlike the European theater, most B17 missions in the Pacific had a smaller number of planes in each mission. Some as few as 3, and seems never more than 30 or so.
