I was told that 200 hrs of T-6 time was a good starting point if you wanted to be one of their pilots.

This thing is too cool. And I agree that it's a mean looking a/c. Anyone have a rough estimate of known remaining examples of the Il-2, in whatever condition?

The condition of the documents, money, and other paperwork is nothing short of jaw-dropping... and these two men were finally able to be properly laid to rest. BTW, I found another video from another source covering the same group of guys (Mikhail Romanov, Boris whats-his-name and others) recovering what may be another Il-2 wreck from a frozen lake near Pskov:
This just gets more fascinating by the day.

I've seen pics from a Stuka recovery in Russia a few years back and the condition of cloth, leather and documents was similarlily amazing.
They found an MP40 that cleaned up beautifully, except for the 30 degree bend in the barrel!

Anyone know what US bookstore chains carry Classic Wings (if any)? I'd love to read anything more about Sturmoviks, whether wartime stories or about surviving aircraft. They're not an aircraft I'm very familiar with.

Matt it would be best to get a subscription to the mag,I can recommend it, there is always something interesting in every one. There is a different take on things which makes it better than the rest in my opinion.

A subscription would be the way to go as it's a great magazine but if that's not an option i've seen it at Barnes and Noble.
