WOW...If so many 8-10 year olds enjoyed it, I'll have to go see it.
Ya' know...senility has it's advantages.

Re: Ok I have to ask who saw Red Tails

Went and saw it Friday morning...
Besides what everybody else is commenting on...

Would like to see how they staged all the mock up aircraft.
Wonder if they will be for sale soon...or is that where the 20,000 for a P 51 comment is coming from?

Thought the German air base was packed to close together.. The Me 109 belly landing into the middle of the parked aircraft was more Hollyweird than real life..The JU 87;s really look off at least I think they were JU 87's.. Did they mix aircraft types on German airfields?

This is an addition from my original post.
There were no flying JU 87's in the movie. IF they were CGI generated they did not look realistic compared to the JU 87's I have seen in Museums.. Maybe FHC will get theirs flying... They could be cutouts of JU 87's similar to the B-17s cut outs used in the remake of The Memphis Bell.

Thought there would be more air to air sequences in the movie... The CGI was OK.. some repetitious issues with it...
They did not show their transition to P 47's then to P 51's The destroyer was sunk with a P 47 not a 51.. Did they sink it with the 50 cals only or with bombs??
This is an addition from my original post. Looks like the destroyer was a reconditioned patrol boat of some sort, It ws run aground and scuttled rather than sunk..

Still think Pearl Harbor was worse....

Did anyone catch all the radial engine sound in the back ground of the P 51 shots?
The 51's were shut down and they were doing scenes and the aircraft engines in the back ground sounded like a T6 flying by...
Kept hearing the same engine in the background of these shots...figured you would have heard a variety of engine noises in the background and not just one specific engine...

This is an addition from my original post.
There should have been several different aircraft sounds rather than the same aircraft flying around the air base. Different radials make different sounds as do different inline engines...There should have been more variety of aircraft in the air. .

Besides most of the shot down 17's losing a wing and some of the aerobatics performed it seemed to be the the thing that caught my attention the most...

Yes, I'm sure the 15-year-olds for whom this film was made with be SHOCKED by the radial-engine sounds. Also interesting that you thought the CGI was just "okay," yet it fooled you into thinking those were real Ju-87s. There are no flyable Ju-87s anywhere in the world other than inside a computer.

The Red Tails cleared a way on the beaches of Normandy. Without them, Germany would still occupy most of Europe and would be controlling the economy of the world today. The whole world owes its salvation to the Red Tails.

Renowned director George Lucas brings you their epic story.

What the critics are saying:

It’s the first movie I almost walked out of while the credits were on the screen.

I'm working on a big ol' "I TOLD YOU SO" sign.

Pearl Harbor isn't looking so bad now.

It's as hokey as 'MEMPHIS BELLE' was.

Laid a big smokin' one.

It made the Star Wars episode 1's script seem like Oscar material.

The dialogue was so cliche and, frankly, amateurish in the first 5 minutes that I, too, nearly walked out.

Save yourself a few bucks and see a matinee showing.

Worse than Pearl Harbor; absolute crap.

Maybe this is why Lucas just retired.

Pretty wooden over all.

I haven't seen an aviation film with dialogue so full of cliches since, "Airplane!"

Save your money and avoid this stinker.

The most entertaining element is a storyline involving a romance!

WOW...If so many 8-10 year olds enjoyed it, I'll have to go see it.

Red Tails. In theaters now!

Re: Ok I have to ask who saw Red Tails - does it matter?

Been watching the posts here...just a quick reality check on why this movie is good for all us...the last thing we want to do is sacrifice goodness for perfection...keep in mind the audience is the general public .

None of these movies were 100% accurate nor could they be:

+ Wings
+ Dawn Patrol
+ Hells Angels
+ Flying Tigers
+ Battle Of Britain
+ Tora Tora Tora
+ Pearl Harbor

...but likely they all did inspire us to pursue our aviation and warbird dreams...

This reminds me of something we did at an airshow in Charleston SC. The event team wanted to do a "Pearl Harbor" like sequence where the pilot was driven up in a jeep wearing a floral shirt, takes off and shoots down the Japanese Kate replica. The event team asked if I was concerned about historical accuracy; I gave it the green light as it was something that the general public could relate to. No matter that the P-51 Mustang shot down the Kate in the Pearl Harbor sequence...the entire crowd and especially the vets loved the whole thing.

The benefits outweigh the negatives...so watch for people coming to airshows wanting to see the same...if some of them know what a P-51 is now rather an "...an old airplane" so much the better...

:drink3:

Seriously why?
Yes the black pilots had a rough time on both sides.
So maybe they deserve more coverage and honor. I agree.
But in the scheme of things they were doing the same job as everyone else.

Just returned from watching Red Tails... And I'm in a great mood.
I just spent two hours watching warbirds and legendary men get their Hollywood due... Key word HOLLYWOOD.
The movie starts with INSPIRED by True Events and it is an inspired retelling (just not 100% accurate).
My Wife and Son will enjoy this movie and that's a good thing.
I will have a fun time explaining the inaccuracies to them and what the truth was.
The movie is raising awareness of the Tuskegee Airmen and their exploits.
Just a little research by the folks who are interested in the Airmen will reveal all the true details of their fight for equality.
Let's hope this leads to more movies of our Greatest Generation!
And if it's got Warbirds in it, so much the better! :D

Just got home from watching the movie. Was it a documentary, most certainly not. Was it a good story that relied on some old story lines, yep. Is there problems with the accuracy with the time line, yep. All the money spent on CGI, did they screw up the markings, absolutely. Not sure where the Normandy comments came from but the landings were suppose to be at Anzio, a landing that gets very little coverage. No masks or goggles at altitude, all good Hollywood. The German flight leader was out of central casting, thought this story was to be breaking stereotypes?
Overall, a great way to spend time with the wife on a yukkie afternoon.

Good point, Dave. "Inspired by...", "Based on the book by..." et al, all mean that somewhere in the movie, there's a reference to something that actually happened or something that was said in the book. It's kind of a "disclaimer" for the production.

I have to say the movie was OK. Not a bad for a Sunday. About what I expected. Sterotpical for the genre.

I saw it this afternoon and thought it was "ok". In my opinion the CGI was pretty darn good. I think the love story part was pretty cheesy and could have been left out of the script. I did have a laugh inside when I saw the two high g, back flip looking, manuevers. I'm sure I'll buy the blu ray when it comes out though.

One thing that I thought was kind of cool, is the theater was an even mixture of different races.

I read the earlier post about the 20k to build a full scale replica and I have to say I know guys that have 30k in 1/3 scale RC models.

Edit: I just read my post and the word d*mn was edited to darn automatically. Are you kidding me, we can't even use the word d*mn?

Hopefully the CAF Red Tail Project will be a sell out everywhere it goes now.

I will say this, if it helps tell the story to a generation that would never hear it, then it will do some good.
