A Mosquito (D5-D, serial number NT 181) of No 620 Squadron, RAF at East Wretham, home of the 359th Fighter Group.

P-51 Mustangs (CS-E, serial number 44-13893) nicknamed "Caroline", (CS-L, serial number 44-14733) nicknamed "Ruggie's Ruthie" , (CS-F, serial number 44-13795) nicknamed "Marg" and (CS-K, serial number 44-13966) of the 359th Fighter Group lined up at East Wretham.

The nose art of a P-51 Mustang (L2-V, serial number 44-14651) nicknamed Pin Up Girl of the 434th Fighter Squadron, 479th Fighter Group.

Personnel of the 458th Bomb Group gather around a B-24 Liberator (serial number 41-29303) nicknamed Liberty Lib in order to transfer a casualty through the waist gun window into the waiting ambulance.

Personnel of the 381st Bomb Group with Ambulances watch B-17 Flying Fortress fly low over Ridgewell.

Just a general note and I can only speak for myself, but nothing I have ever posted on this website has ever been about 'look at me' but rather in my small way help contribute to the utmost importance in preserving history and paying respect to those who fought. I've been booted off this site a couple of times and have tried to walk away a few times, but then I see a photo or two that encompasses everything a veteran stands for and I feel an obligation to post it here (as long as it fits in with the mission of this site) which it usually does. .... it's hard to walk away from that even when some knucklehead comes along and can't keep from spouting off nonsense. As long as there's a WWII veteran around I'll stick around too.

One of the best lines I've seen posted here in a long time below.

"If you want to save history you have to do it yourself, waiting for someone else to do it usually doesn't work."

As part of the testing program they combat dropped 'Pumpkins', bombs using a Fat Mat shaped casing filled with conventional explosives. Aerodynamically identical, they were used to test and check aim, fusing etc (and blow stuff up - it was still a 10,000lb bomb with 6300 lb of Composition B)

Thank-you for these beautiful color photos.

The P-47 UN-K "GEORGE" was personal aircraft of 1LT John E Ross - a replacement pilot transferred from RCAF - operational with 63rdFS in December 1943 - July 1944.

Would you have additional photos of this aircraft? This was my grandfather's aircraft.

Thanks for yet another wonderful photo posting, Mark. Here is the fate of the B-17 above.

B-17G 44-83494 returned to U.S., assigned to Andrews and equipped like a VB although she may have not been so designated. Crashed on approach to Offutt AFB 12 February 49, pilot error. One KIS.
