Paul/Martin,
If you check photos on Peter Randall's or Jim Sterling's sites you can see 56th FG P-47Ds without dorsals in the same serial number range and if the run the number you'll get -28RA so this a/c w/o a fin fillet doesn't seem unusual at all.

From my references, dorsal fin was only factory installed on P-47D-40RA, and some time during P-47N-1RE production, until the end of production.

Hey Guys,

I had the chance to see the P-47 in person!! I happened to be on vacation in that Austrian lake region when the news broke and decided to take the train over and check it out. It was really great to see, what luck.
I talked to the recovery crew for a while. The company who undertook the search and recovery was Sandy Air Corp. They told me that they are also rebuilding a Ju-52 cockpit in there workshop in Austria but the P-47 will be restored in America. Their web site is www.sandyair.com and second site www.warbird.at
They also mentioned other ongoing search projects but with no specific details.

Warbird.at is also selling a Ki-43 hulk, similar to one found by Doug Champlin!
