I think tying them down would have really done nothing. The tornado either would have ripped the wing off or pulled out the tie downs. Imagine the looks you would have gotten in 1979 if you wanted to tie down a c-133?

Instructions for tying them down for severe weather (high winds) are available for most military aircraft. You can prepare for a hurricane, it is a bit harder to predict a tornado.

Even worse, never predicting a tornado in the north east.

They were all on a grassy area so it would've been amazing if tie downs held. Also, severe weather was not expected and even the NG helicopters were tossed around. My friend's Champ was tied down on the East Ramp and the tie downs held but the wings failed and it looked like a pretzel!

I think if the attach points survived the tornado, they would have had the world's largest kites blowing around in the breeze.


What kind of spool of twine would you need for a C-133?

The only reason I brought up the tie down question was I have seen so many videos of Aircraft not tied down blowing up in the air or being tossed about. From a GA perspective whenever I have flown, after we land for the day, we tie the plane down.

For a hurricane, you don't just tie down at a couple of tie-down loops on the wings. There is a lot more to it and it is covered in the aircraft Technical Orders.

Even if the plane stayed put, you can't plan for where Dorothy's house will end up!
