I didn't get to Oshkosh in 1998, but based on Dick's photos, it must have been a hot, dry year. Here, Frasca's Spitfire kicks up enough dust as it taxis over the dead grass to obscure the crowds of onlookers and other Oshkosh trappings. It could almost be the dry season in Burma or India in 1946.

They are brutes, indeed! Still beautiful even if they sound like freight trains compared to the Merlin Spits.

I was working on my site's Spitfire gallery this weekend. I have photos of 63 different Spits up there now. There should be something to suit everyone's taste.

Here are a few pics of FG-1D 67089 "Skyboss" now "Godspeed," from the Madera airshow in 1989.







This Corsair has been through a few owners since then, but all have maintained the proud tradition of painting it completely inaccurately.

1989 was the only year I made it to Madera. I think it was one of the last years, if not the last year, they held the show. The glory days of the show were earlier in the 1980s before I moved to California. The 1989 show was not bad, though, by any stretch. There were several planes there that I've not seen before nor since.

I've been neglecting my web pages lately, but this weekend I populated my Grumman HU-16 Albatross page with most of the Albatrosses from the Kamm-Horvath collection. There are 23 Albatrosses shown on the page, some of them, alas, no longer with us, having been abandoned, crashed, and even scrapped.

That really is a remarkable photo. I'm constantly trying to crop people out of my Oshkosh photos! Hard to do with the crowds. Someone in the frame with a backpack and a stroller would certainly ruin it.
