Well done Rich, when is there going to be some air under those wings??

Looking good. I like the mods to the Spitfire oiling system too.

Looking forward to Bald Eagle making her (re)debut too.

Hi,

Any chance of more information on how you've overcome the oiling/camshaft issue on the Griffon Spit? I'm part of a group that maintain an Avro Shackleton in the UK, and we've encountered a similar problem.

See here...

I think our problem is similar. We're fitting pre-oiling pumps, but I'm not sure it will cure it.

Ric

Here are two slides that I made regarding the plumbing and the "B" bank mods. No shots of the "A" bank but Rich may have shots of what he did to it. Also look earlier where you can see the shots of the Roush mods to our camshafts to put the .040 holes a la Packard. Also, it seems that below 35psi main oil pressure the low pressure system can't supply pressure to the top of the engine, and the pressure at the cams is zero. I'm changing my procedures to now run the pre-oiler when I'm taxiing in and the main pressure is below 35. That should help provide enough pressure and flow to the distal part of the "A" bank.

That Shackelton is AWESOME. Good luck with it!. Jim

Many thanks for the quick repsonse!

Thanks for the compliments on the Shackleton too. I've just been reading back through this thread and you have some pretty awesome toys yourselves!

We've got hold of some oil priming pumps and we've got the connectors for the tanks, so I'm going to pass this info on to our engine guy and get him to take a look. I've not heard of the Roush modification; that may be worth looking into. In total we found 5 torn up cams so we have quite a bit of work ahead of us.

Thanks again,

Rich

it's actually a Packard mod for the merlin when they built it under license. They drilled .040 oil holes in the lobes so oil was pushed out of the lobes in the area before the finger pad was lifted by the lobe. Roush checked out the cams and found them identical (but bigger!) than the merlin cams so it seemed reasonable to do it. You can see the oil coming out of them in the earlier shots Rich posted.

Rich can you chime in here and tell how you directly plumbed the "A" bank.

On the QEC-
Image
Go to the fwd head/bank area-
Image
Image
Each side will have a bleeder plug (hex plug with saftey wire) on the O/B side just fwd of the exhaust-
Image
On the mk 61 head this is the oil feed point, on the mk 58 this is a bleeder plug to check oil flow during pre-oiling.
The main oil feed point on a 58 is underneath the fwd head and there is a hole that the feed tube interconnects with when the head is dropped into position. We have 58 head/banks on the 61 bottom end. They are pretty much the same in how they fit, (61 vs 58), just slight differences in the oil feed and breather set ups.
Back to creating a pre oil set up for your Shackleton. I would engineer some fittings to connect a 1/4 to 3/8" feed line to each of these bleed points. T these points together with a check valve to the pressure side of the pre oil pump. The Spit runs about 12 psi on the pre oil system. You need a decent flow rate with the oil. I would keep pressure about 10-20 psi.
I really don't know what thread or size these are. The British system of doing things is hard for me to master.
If you can also figure out a way to pre oil the main bearings as well it will help the engine to last longer. You have to isolate the cam oiling pre oil system which is low pressure and the main oil system is high pressure so whether you use a manually selectable valve or another check valve to accomplish this.
But you can connect to this point at the front of the engine-
Image
It feeds right into the oil galley that feeds the main bearings. I pre oiled the Spit at this point as this on a Mk 61 supplies oil pressure to the ATD. On the 58 you will have to drill and tap into the small oval plate with 2 nuts seen above in the photo.

Outstanding info Rich, this is why I look for this one first and thanks to the mods for putting a sticky on it...

Mods- Why the movement?
Been here for a couple years And I would prefer to keep it here on the main board of WIX.
This is where everyone knows to find it.

I agree with Rich. Can the moddies put it back on the main page and just make it a sticky? Along with GA's Old 927 thread, this is one of the best there is. :D

Mods-
Thanks.

Never been a sticky before.
Do I have to give Jack a Pony or something?
