It a list of the crew.

There are more than 20 lines of names in white above the USAAF serial number and five more in a dark color below it.
That is a really large "crew"

To me, counting them off (with the photo viewed larger), the bright lines above the serial/tail number total 25 - it would therefore seem very plausible that they had the missions flown, listed, as well as the names of the crew listed elsewhere (there are what appear to be lines of type, harder to see, under the serial/tail number as well, and weren't the names of the crew listed on or near the rear crew door?).

It may be a mission list, but at one time the crew was up there too. Originally crew names were by the crew hatch in the waist. From the time the plane left England and on the Warbond tour the markings varied.

My next door neighbor just came over and told me that one of his acquaintances told him that the movie Belle has been sitting on the ramp at Canton, GA, for the last two weeks?

He said it was supposed to appear at an 8th AFM fundraiser at PDK this past weekend, but there was an "insurance" issue....

I'm in Alpharetta...any other GA WIXers confirm?

The Movie Memphis Belle is at Cherokee County Airport and will probably be there for the next couple of weeks.

The Special Anniversary Edition of the WWII documentary features a bunch of outtakes, including footage of the last bomb mission marker being painted on several times (it was a closeup, so you probably couldn't see the whole row.) The scene may have been shot well after the actual mission mark had been added. The one being painted on during the film was likely done with water-based paint and washed off between takes, then removed entirely after filming. Even though the film is a documentary, many of the ground scenes were carefully staged and shot multiple times.

Bob Morgan told me on two different occasions that a lot of the photos and film you see of "the final mission" and the celebration and other things that took place afterward was actually staged for the cameras. He said to me once, "For someone to know the true story of the plane, you'd have to have been there for all of it." and not count on the photos and films...

I understand the NMUSAF plans to paint the Belle as she appeared on her 23rd or 24th mission. That's the one they have the best photo/film coverage of, and they want her to appear as she did while flying combat, rather than with any extra markings added afterwards.

Yeah the 23rd mission has the most documentation on markings. The Belle actually did fly one or two more missions with another crew after her 25. Then was sent back to the states.
