The Texas Museum of Military History announced plans for a large building in 1981. Now, you might be wondering why it is being mentioned in a thread about aviation museums. That's because after the fundraising effort failed, it eventually became the Dyess Memorial Center and Linear Air Park:

The museum will trace the military history of Texas, beginning with the 16th century. The initial structure will cost between $850,000 and $1,150,000. It will be near the Dyess main gate.

Before the South Dakota Air and Space Museum received the four former F-89 alert hangars and two story building in which it is now housed, it had plans for a brand new 10,000 square foot building:
