This happened in the UK, they tried to trace the Chipmunk be were unable to identify which one it was.

That is a good "oh crap" moment. I guess you should always look both ways before jumping out of a perfectly good airplane...

It's pretty hard to see a skydiver free-falling. I've operated out of a couple airports with skydiving outfits located on the field. You hear "jumpers away" and start looking, but until they are under parachute, it's rare to spot them. We had one operator who couldn't seem to get their jump planes in the right spot. They would strew jumpers all over the county. It would be scary to be flying where you supposed to be and then see chutes popping all around you. It was a miracle no one was killed (at least by an airplane)

Was the Chipmunk in the wrong?

That's what I was wondering, who was in the wrong...

In the parachute vs cherokee accident in Massachusetts a few years back, ATC got most of the blame along with the jump plane: http://ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20 ... 3693&key=1
At our airport, they would call out "jumpers away in x minutes" until jumpers away. They were supposed to land in the center of the airport and not cross over the runway and the airport was notamed for no overflight. Other than that, if they wind up with jumpers on both sides of the runway, and you have to do a go-around, what are you gonna do? If they aren't where they were supposed to be, and you can't see them it's kind of a crap shoot. Don't know what happened in the video, but you could see the Chipmunk coming . . .

The parachutist was jumping into a well known parachute field. The Chipmunk strayed somewhat into it.

Doesn't the jump plane clear the area visually first?

There is a jump operation at both Boulder and Longmont. In the interest of safety I talked to one of the pilots. He told me jumpers can usually see planes,but can't maneuver out of the way. Sometime I hear the jump plane pilot make the reqired call over the radio, but they talk so fast it doesn't seem like they care whether the message is reallly heard.
