Warbird Information Exchange

I was just wondering if anybody knows the exact count of surviving Douglas F4D/F-6A Skyray's?
I know about 6-7 off hand, but how many of the 420 built survive?
I know it's not a flying warbird, but it is a vintage one!

The ones off the top of my head are;

1. New England Air Museum...2 (1 complete, 1 damaged hulk)
2. PAX River
3. Naval Aviation Museum, Pensecola
4. U.S. Naval Museum of Armament & Technology, China Lake (XF4D prototype, I believe)
5. Oceana NAS, VA
6. Pima

There has to be more than that, I hope!

I think there is at least one F-5 Skylancer on display at the Neil Armstrong Museum in Ohio.

Wasn't there one in the airplane park at Willow Grove N.A.S.
Maybe Willow Grove isn't even there anymore...this was around 1976.

I've been to Willow Grove a couple of times since 1976 and there wasn't an F4D/F-6 there in 1981, 1984 or 1988.

If Shay's list from J. Baugher is correct, it's sbout what I'd thought, not many survivors for such a cool aircraft. It's rarer than some people think.
I wasn't sure the Intrepid or Yorktown had one. Anybody?

I don't recall ever seeing one at Willow Grove, and I didn't see one at either the Intrepid or Yorktown when I visited those years ago.

I've been to both Intrepid and Yorktown recently and, no, they don't have one, don't think they ever have.

In Major Gen. Marion Carl's book "Pushing the Envelope" he said the Skyray was his all time favorite dogfighter for speed , power and manueverability. When stationed on the west coast, he used to pick unauthorized dogfights out over the ocean with the Navy and Air Force guys and said nothing could top the F-6A Skyray for pure dogfighting.

neil armstrong had considerable time in 1. a gate guard version stands outside of his museum in wapakoneta ohio.

That is a F5D Skylancer at that museum, not an F4D Skyray. Even rarer.

Astronaut Walt Cunningham got all excited when he found out that an F-4D was coming to Houston as a flyer. His enthusiasm waned when he found out it was just a Phantom!
