B24 Liberator useless fact N. 345

Did ya all know that the B-24 -

Has only 4 bolts holding each Fin to the evalator stabs at the rear.

The it has only 8 bolts holding this stab section to the fuselage.

Amazingly strong structure for such strong wing and wind loading in flight.

Or any other T56/501D installation...

Although, that doesn't count the cables, safety straps (wait, those connect the engine to the mount...), hoses (LOTS of hoses), and wiring trying to keep the engine from departing the airplane as well.

Actually 4 bolts isn't unusual for a mount. They're usually large, of high carbon-carbon steel, and long (3-4 inches is about the shortest I've seen). Most cars have 4 bolts holding the engine in as well (unless it's a super-tricked out hot rod where you've got extra mounts to help keep the engine and body moving at the same rate when you floor the pedal).

Do you know that on a T-6, there are only 8 bolts that hold the fuselage to the wing. 4 bolts that hold the engine mount to the airframe ? 4 bolts that hold the aft fuselage to the truss structure. Yet it seems that there are 15 jillion bolts that hold the outer wings to the wing center section.

Not that it makes much of a difference (sorry for the nit!) but there are
8 bolts that hold the aft fuselage to the truss structure on a T-6.

Hey, there's only 2 pins that hold on the wings of the F-14, F-111, B-1B, Su-27, Tu-22M, Tu-160, and MiG-23.

Having worked on B-1A AV 1, I can attest to the fact that 'pin' is a misnomer, they froze the pin in liquid nitrogen for 24 hours before installing the first one and had a very tiny time window because it was well over 100 f when they installled it, seroius co-ordination-
