Taking about the B-24s aft cg got me to thinking of the old Stoof which turned into taildragger on take-off. How many tricycle geared a/c needed a tailwheel? DON'T say the Defender

Both are around as far as I know, just have not been on the air show tour for some time. Those two Wright 1820's at take off power with those short stacks sure do sound awesome!

Double Nuts was C-1A 6044 N189G. It was Double Nuts when it was owned by Jerry Janes and based here in Vancouver (Boundary Bay CZBB). It since went to Topeka, KS to Trader Air (Doug Goss), and was heavily damaged when the bottom cylinders on the #2 engine blew up, resulting in a belly landing in a cornfield. btw, Does anyone know the registration it wore when it was based in Canada?

Both the S-2 and C-1 had tail wheels, as they were basically the same plane, at least the wings and tail are the same. Doug's C-1 lost the #1 cylinder, it seperated from the case and took out the oil line that was routed over the top of the cylinder, to the prop governer, no oil, no feathering of the prop. Without being able the feather the prop, there was only one place to go and that was down. The belly landing was good, only problem was it was in a cornfield that was close to harvest and the corn stalks and cobbs beat the plane up pretty badly. I made sure our oil lines were routed AROUND the cylinder

Doug's Trader is being rebuilt, the top cyl. on #2 engine blew off taking with it the prop feathering controls which caused the baldes to go to flat pitch. Doug made one hell on a landing in a cornfield in which all three on board walked away without a bump or bruise. we are hoping that it will fly in 2008.

It was sold to a guy in Oregon or Washington State.

My dad used to be the pilot for that Tracker, lotsa good stories and memories from those 1820's

The Fouga Magister has a tailwheel that is fixed in between the fin halves on the bottom of the tail.

Don't forget, our Tracker is on the circuit here on the east coast. The tailwheel was installed mainly for catapult launches off the carrier. It used a bridal system that attached about midway between the nose wheel and the mains and from what I have been told, it usually caused the nose wheel to be off the deck during the entire run. From talking to Stoof pilots, they normally would not use the catapult for take-offs, they would just take-off straight down the deck. Another side note, our tail wheel is actually off of a Grumman Wildcat.

We would love to come up there for it. If you know who to contact up there we will try again this year to come up. Plus I think in past years we've always had other shows that weekend so it never worked out but this year I believe our schedule is open then.
