Anyone know any details of Bob Diemert building a wood, steam powered P-51? It's for real! I'd love to see pics if any one has any or knows any details!

I hope to God someone is filming a documentry on this....... ala DEFENDER. This could be even better. Especially if he has the same crew assisting him.

You can order the Defender video from the Canadian Film Board ( kinda like PBS). If you haven't seen the Defender video, the first time you'll scratch your head like "what just happened, was that for real?" When you realize Diemert is dead serious it's the funniest thing ever seen in your life.

That's without a doubt the most asked question you'll get when showing The Defender to anyone for the first time......."Is this for real???"

You bet it is! I've probably watched it over 50 times now (while showing it to others), and it cracks me up every time.

Mudge, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of it. I would imagine that it's got to be the Canadian Film Board's most popular request for an older documentary.

Mudge - if you have problems getting a copy of The Defender, PM me and I may be able to help.

It isn't too far-fetched. There is a 1:1 scale FW-190 made out of wood flying in Europe right now.

A Mossi flies pretty well being made of wood and even sounds twice as good as a Mustang. Spitfire propellors are wood, spruce I think, and I may recall experiments in building full wooden Spits in case al shortages. Can't remember the details.

They were made out of a similar material to Bakelite Bill. Check the Shacklady book on the Spit, it's in there.

It's the steam engine....part that is a bit funny

If anyone is curious about steam engines.....and some the associated throttle lag  for an AC application.

Just do a quick seach on external combustion Sterling Steam engines....ya'll be surprised that GM considered it in the 70's

They had production wooden T-6 tailcones flying during the war. Never got certified under the T-6 type certificate though, in fact I think they are specifically excluded. Some BT-13s had wooden tailcones too I think.

They may have used phenolic resin in the manufacture of Spitfire prop blades, but I doubt they were made of Bakelite!
