The comment about the calibrated instruments made my jaw it the floor. I think that was my favorite.

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

Jim Bates brought his copy when he and is better half came to Ottawa for the last open house at Vintage Wings. I thought it was a spoof at first. Then I realized they were serious. Then there was a short period confusion trying to understand "Why?" After that (about 10 minutes in) it became hilarious.

I hadn't heard of it either, but its sounds like its well worth seeing.

The Geneseo viewing doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. And in case anyone can't wait that long, here's the link to the National Film Board where it can be purchased.

Thanks for the link, I may see how painful it is to get shipped into the US.

I always get a kick out of the one scene where they say, ".....while getting ready for the flight, they prepared the runway." And it shows Chris Ball (the trusty assistant) mowing this grass strip that has to be 200 ft. wide by about a mile long, with a 22" push mower.

OR

How about when they can't get the Zero out of the hangar and drop it while pulling it sideways, and Deimert says, "Well...It's oooot (Canadian for out)."

Man, I could go on all day with "favorite scenes."

I was introduced to The Defender in a dear friend's house in the early 1990s after I had been flying the CAF A6M2 Zero shown in the video for a while. I swear that I asked if this wasn't really a Monty Python take-off at least twice.

One of my favorite scenes was the introduction of his electronics expert, who also owned a "tank" - actually a Bren gun carrier - and the attack on it by a borrowed Bonanza, with the logic that it takes a slow airplane to defeat a slow tank.

Jumping a bit ahead, several years ago I flew the CAF SB2C Helldiver to a reunion of the workers who had built them under license at CanCar in what is now Thunder Bay, Canada. We were to be part of a filming of the "Rosies of the North" - i.e. the women (and men) who built not only Helldivers but also Hurricanes and Harvards. We participated in the air show and even gave a ride to one of the "Rosies" - 77 years young, I think, in the gunner's seat. When we asked how she would like to ride, enclosed with the guns stowed or open holding onto the guns, all she said was basically, "...like the fellows who fought in these did!" She was a real trooper, even throwing off her floppy shoes to mount into the gunner's seat. We made a couple of passes and landed to find her absolutely delighted and happy.

While visiting with the Canadian film board producer and crew that were filming this event, I asked if any had been involved with the production of The Defender and they all pointed to one of the camera men - turned out he had helped shoot The Defender and I can tell you we had a lot of laughs over the next day or two.

If you haven't seen The Defender you need to. I have some more I could say about the whole thing with the Zero, etc. but if you haven't see the video, it just won't "click". The video is about 55 minutes long and copyright by the National Film Board of Canada 1988 so it isn't something we can just post for everyone to view, I'm afraid.

My favorite scene is the whole movie on a bad day and I need a good belly laugh I put that on. I am thinking about making my own living room pool with wall to wall carpet, or how about scaring the cows and chickens with the tank, while Diemert makes passes at him in the V-tail. Jack if you want a copy I had a friend give me a copy of the DVD Just email off the board.

There is no end to the comedy in the Defender video! The techincal drawing of the Defender on the floor with kids sidewalk chalk is classic. Some of the little things are the best part! Anyone notice the black and white picture of the Japanese engineers with Diemert in front of the Cessna 150 and then later notice what was powering the wind tunnel and finally what wings the defender ended up with? One could quote the entire film, every scene can give you a side ache and the best part is every time you see it, it gets even better!
