Hi Guys,

Well with, what seems to be, a recent “surge” in the amount of Youtube postings so that folks can watch some rather interesting videos. I thought that since I am a bit of a computer geek as well as the other hobbies I am in to. I thought that I would post this note to let folks actually SAVE the videos that they are watching. So, here is a little way to do exactly that.

For myself, to save the videos, I use Internet Explorer, which is an “okay” web browser but having been just another Microsoft invention it has its plus’s and it’s minus’s but for what I’ll show you actually getting the video’s themselves is not all that hard.

What you will need to do is find your “Temporary Internet Files” directory on you PC. This is where the video gets downloaded to so that it can be played. Now, in that directory AFTER the video is completely downloaded or finished playing, you will see a file with a pretty good size, what I do is “sort” the directory by file size. After the file has finished downloading or finished playing open the Temporary Internet Files directory. Look for a file with a name LIKE the following:

get_video?video_id=WbhlaBrDA9k

(This particular file is from the video “Liberator Nose Art”) with a file size of 9,954KB

What you do next is COPY that file to your Desktop.
Then, RENAME the file as (in this case) “Liberator Nose Art.flv”

By naming the file, you give it the identity it needs and by adding the .flv “File Extension” you are essentially telling your computer that I want to play this file with a “Flash Video” video player. The particular Flash Video utility I use is from this website:

This isn’t a bad Flash Video Player, but IF you want to convert the file over to a more Computer friendly format such as wmv, mpg, mpeg, avi, etc…. here is a pretty good FREEWARE program that all you need to do is “drag and drop” the particular .flv file on to it and convert it into whatever you want. Here is the web link to the video conversion utility. BUT, be aware that this little program, while pretty good, is not all that user friendly, so, you may have to experiment with the type of video output file that you are converting TO.

Anyway, I figured that with all of the recent stuff that folks have submitted here for your viewing pleasure on Youtube that maybe some folks would like to save the stuff for their own viewing for later. But, if I may, when you do save these files, please save them with the original file names/descriptions that the original authors put on them. There are a lot of guys who put a lot of their own personal time and effort to shoot the video in the first place, and then upload it TO Youtube for all of us to enjoy it. Please understand, I am NOT condoning video “piracy” in the slightest. Everyone has the right to “own their own fruits of their labors. But I just thought that maybe this way, may be a way to help keep this and all the videos that you get to see from Youtube in your own little personal collection.

If anyone has any questions I’d be glad to see if I could help. But again, I DO NOT CONDONE any video piracy.

And on a personal note to Scott…our very good Web Master here, if you deem this note to be in ANY way a violation of ethic’s or anything…. please delete this at your discretion.

Respectfully,

Paul

I would automatically assume everything I upload to YouTube has the ability to be copied elsewhere. I think anyone who wants to protect their copyright needs to make sure that their videos are watermarked. But as soon as it's "out there" then its gone.

One Sunday morning I uploaded a clip I had filmed to my website, just for a few people to watch, within two weeks it had been downloaded half a million times! I didn't put any watermark on it and now I wish I had.

BTW the clip was the famous Alain De Cadanet/Ray Hanna Spitfire fly over!
