WHy no Vietnam war USAF warbird movies yet ever made???

How come no movie makers have never made a USAF vietnam movie eg south vietnam or north vietnam plot related... it would be good...

Fast movers and props would be great to see in action to recreate history BUT using real planes not computer images..

Will it ever happpen? doubt it.. but can hope.

Grab a few south korean F-4D/Es and Japans F-4Es, instant mobvie gaggle..

And there a start for a great movie

Just need a big budget

I would guess putting gas and insuring the '100 and the Phantom would drain any budget.

I'm guessing "Bat-21" is as close as we've gotten so far.

I agree though, some full-on jet action (F-4 Phanton, A-4 Skyhawk, even B-52) mixed in with 0-2, Skyraider, OV-10, AH-1 Cobra, UH-1 Huey, etc. Enemy planes would be easy enough to accomplish using airworthy MiG-17 and MiG-21 types already in the US. Filming time for each aircraft type could be kept to a minimum by focusing on as many types as possible. Not sure what the premise of such a movie would be, but I'm sure a viable thread could be found in there somewhere.

Personally, I'd be all for focusing on Skyraider, O-2, L-19, COIN T-28's, C-47 "Spooky", T-37 "Tweet" ground attack, with maybe a showcase air battle between MiG-17 and F-4 Phantom thrown in for good measure.

The best potential story for a movie of the USAF in SEA is the rescue of Boxer 22. It details the largest rescue effort in USAF history, some 331 sorites flown in a three-day period to support and rescue one airman shot down in Laos.


It is about time the story of SAR airmen who risked their lives to save downed airmen, received credit. At leat 85% of the proposed movie would display aerial bombing and rescue efforts utilziing nearly every aircraft type in inventory in SEA.

Kind of funny story, but I have the honor to be friends with a man that flew in Air America. A lot of the events in the Air America movie came from his life. All of the true stuff that is. No drugs.

Oscar Duece are you thinking of In the Shadow of the Blade? If not I would throw that on the list as an excellent documentary, and a great effort to commemorate the helicopter guys of Vietnam.

I always wished that movie had been better received. The story needed a bit of work, but it wasn't a bad flick.

I liked the movie, but it could have done with out the drug part of it, although to be fair people think that is true. Although my friend says that it never happened. Here are some of the odd ball parts of the movie that are not only true but based on his life over there. The coloring book scene near the beginning, crashing three times in one day, the C-123 crash landing, his nick name is in the movie "Wierd Neil", The budhast monks blessing the aircraft. The crashe scene in the start of the film where parts of the aircraft come through the bar, the kicker falling out, and hanging on by the cable that he was secured to, the golf course, and a bunch of others. The one part he did not like was that you did not fly both helicopters and fixed wing, you flew on e or the other.

Would that be a guy named Neil Hanson? Read something about him and Air America back some years ago.

What about 'We Were Soldiers' and 'Operation Dumbo Drop'. Both army stories but with some good aviation scenes in them (USAF?)
