Picture #1 - Wow! I don't believe he landed.

Picture #4 - That had to hurt about 1.5 seconds after that picture was taken!

I'm thinkin Brad should not have spent so much time checking the oil and paid a little more attention to the brakes.

I don't know. It looks like that happened during the landing. Probably hit something on the deck.

i've seen that triple hoola hoop prop wash on a number of carrier shots, but never ground bound birds. is it due to the physical characteristics of a carrier coupled with the at sea weather conditions???

Look harder. ;) With high power and in humid conditions, you'll see it on land bases. But you are right that it's probably more common on carriers, 'cost they're always close to water!

I still think #1 is a deck/landing accident. The barrier is obviously on the deck in front of the F4U.

Yep, the vapour spirals off the prop tips happens on land too. Somewhere I've got a shot of the Indiana museum's PV-2 "Hot Stuff" taking off in rather grotty weather with those "Slinky contrails" much in evidence. Have seen Hercs doing this as well. Very dramatic.

OK guys I'll come clean.
This wasn't a crash, accident, incident or anything else.
This was a test of JATO or RATO using a F4U-1A. The smoke fizzling out under the wings is the rocket petering out.
