I am considering creating an Officer's club, a section where you can speak freely and openly about what you wish (except about other members, personal attack rule would still apply) You can post pictures of whatever and general be a little more free than the general area. I will however be a bit draconian in my editing/peacekeeping so be warned. Topics that belong elsewhere will be moved out to the hanger. The O club is not a place to discuss airplanes, but politics would be allowed (as long as your civil)

This section would not be open to the public and you would have to request membership to even see it. Anybody can join but you do so knowing that there might be posts that you might find offensive.

Thoughts?

Well, as someone who has not reached officer status, I think it will only work for a while until somebody there gets offeneded by something and the whole thing starts again.

Being on a few boards I have moved from the regular to the exclusive only to find the problems coming right back.

All this can be avoided by folks thinking a bit about what they are about to post and those who do post something offensive or off topic and are asked to drop it do just that, drop it.

Why stick another iron in the fire when this one seems to be enough?

Just my .02 cents!

My vote is "no" because...No matter how well intentioned it may start out, inevitably, someone's going to say something that pi$$es someone else off and it will deteriorate from there.
Scott, please don't overload yourself with stuff you really don't need. I know a lot of the folks here have some strong political views 'cause they've sneaked (subtly) into a few posts. Neither you nor anyone you designate can "intercept" every offensive post BEFORE it offends. The only thing you can do "after the fact" is to chastise the offending party.

I vote yes...most message boards have their "adult" section where any and all subjects can be discussed without fear of offending someone because it is "private". Only those that KNOW what kind of things could be discussed, viewed, etc in that area would be allowed access.

Scott,

I have to agree with Mudge on this one...even if you have a members only section some sensitive individual is going to get offended about something whether it be radial engines vs. inline engines, bombers vs. fighters, homosexual vs. heterosexual, Republican vs. Democrat, etc...etc...etc. :? I think the last few threads that were shut down was a prime example of this. It only takes one person to whip out the "O" word (offended  ) and next thing you know the thread is gone.

John

I think we're already adults here and should just start acting like it. :?
Off-topics is there already with it's myspace thread so the boys and girl can giggle and chat about nothing.

Scott,

Once again, thank-you for this labor of love called WIX.

Just the fact that you are thinking about this possibility (O CLub) is one more indication of your desire to have the best community in the aviation web site arena.

I believe the Off-Topic area covers most of the concerns I may have and I try not to add fuel to any fires in threads that annoy me in some way.

So, I don't need the O Club.

Thanks again Scott.

I think that trying to moderate an online forum so it pleases everyone is a loosing battle. I say moderate it as you see fit and if anyone complains tell them to start their own web board and they can moderate it at their will.

If you are worried about "passers-by" being offended maybe the "Officers Club" access could be by request only to be allowed into that forum. If you join that forum you are accepting the responsabilty of being a big boy or girl and if someone wets in your Cheerios and you get offended and complain about it just kick em out of the "big boy" section. I think you should put the responsabilty of "being offended" on those who are offened. If they don't like a particular thread then they should just have the self control to skip it and if they don't want to risk being offended at all maybe they shouldn't be using the internet. It is one thing if you have out and out slanderous comments it is another for one or another's sensativities to be applied to moderation in my opinion. You can't really have discussions about Politics without offending someone so I say either ban politics all together or tell people to suck it up. Anyways, I'm sure this post will cause a deluge of complains (Sorry Scott).

Thinking back to the start of WIX. Most of us were castoffs when the old Warbird Worldwide forum collapseed. If I remember right that started with someone taking offence to a statement on the forum which lead to a law suit. Personally I think it is a bad idea.

Greetings scott,

Yeah I agree with Mudge here and most of the other posts... its not
really needed, and just more work for you and or ryan, etc. And
theres already an off topics area... So just a little more support for
your sanity!

And the real reason for writing this is to say personally say THANKS
so much for your efforts in keeping this a great place to recharge
our warbird batteries! :-)

I also was there, and being associated with WW I had a little more info on that than most. IIRC, 'just' an injunction was served, and suddenly no forum - as was pointed out to a poster here recently who also made (in the opinion of another poster) a defamatory remark. Sometimes some people think anoying others means they're doing it right - and on occasion that can have the whole playground closed down.

i vote yes, i get tired of holding my tongue for political correctness. while i'm not out to hassle anybody, i'm a firm believer in speaking my mind in a civil respectable way, & ask that this courtesy is reciprocated. in this manner, the "o" club thing will work. if it turns into a jerry springer format, i'll never post on it. i'm a gentleman above all.

I love ya Scott, But I'm going to vote no.

I'm a fan of the Off Topic area, and it is moderated, moderately.

Any "Anything goes" kinda area is going to cause some hard feelings, and like anywhere else, the dude who screams the loudest owns it, because no one else wants to play anymore. It would suck if those feelings bled over into the real WIX. And it will.

I remember that you and I already had this conversation in Nashua over two years ago. My opinion has not changed.

If thats the case then whats the point? Why put yourself through that? If you feel you need to be a bit draconian in your editing/peacekeeping, then do so on the boards as they exsist now. If someone starts a thread and it's obvious that the intent is just to stir up crud, step on it. If a thread is posted in the wrong area, move it and tell the person nicely that it goes here and not there. If they do it again, don't be so nice   .

Honestly I think the biggest problem with the Off-topics board right now is that not enough people are using it. They either don't know it exsists or just plain don't give a care where they post.

If it were your intent to create this area so that underage persons could not accidentally view posts that use coarse language (adult humor shall we say) or things along those lines, I would say it was a good idea. It would be nice to have a place where you can kick back with people who are old enough to know better, but still do it anyway.

As is though, I voted no.
