Hi gang,

Well, I just got back on the red-eye from Phoenix this morning and am now slept up enough to check back in with WIX. I had posted previously that I was accompanying my wife on a trip there for her second interview with a private school there to become a teacher with them. The intervew went well and my wife and I have been getting really excited about the prospect of moving out there... from a warbird point of view... I AM REALLY EXCITED!

I didn't get too much of a chance to explore, so my trips were really brief. I stopped in to Glendale Airport for about 15 minutes on Thursday afternoon just to see Hans Lauridsen's planes based there. I was poking about to see if Matt Gunsch was there, but I didn't see... if you were there, I missed ya man, but I'll be back!

Image
Lauridsens PBY - When is she getting painted?

Image
Laurisdens C-47... paint here too? Who's Mig-21?

A surprise for me... I think its been mentioned here before... an F-8 Crusader sitting in a T-Hangar? What's the story on this one?
Image

There was also a T-6 poking out of a hangar on the North end and a Mig-15 poking out of a hangar on the south end. Both were too far for me to take a fenceline photo. There was also a plane that I saw the nose of in a T-Hangar near the North end that looks predominantly red... nosewheel... two-blade prop... looked like a Ranger engine on it. Was this a Navion I was seeing or was it some other bird? (for those that know the area).

Lil and I went looking at apartment communities for when we move out here (pending a favorable return call from the school this coming week) and since her school will be in Mesa, we looked around there. Found a great place on Higley and Mckellips... ONE BLOCK FROM FALCON FIELD!

Lil loved the gated community, the roman tubs, the high quality of the property. I loved the fact that an SNJ was in the pattern overhead for 15 minutes and the B-17 Sentimental Journey was up for rides... what a bonus!

We'll most likely live there when we move out, and yes, we'll have a guest bedroom for WIX folks wanting a crashpad. :-)

By the time I did a drive around at Falcon, it was late and the light was getting bad. CAF was closed, but hey, I'll be there more when we move.

Image
Hans' B-25 and a BT-13... will she be a flyer? When is the "Mare" getting back in the air? Anyone have an update on the CAF B-25 there?

Image
SJ and the SNJ that were up earlier... what beauties!

Image
A PV-2 near the gate... what's the story with this plane and why it's painted like a Ventura? Was/Is/Will it be a flyer eventually?

The B-25H "Barbie III" was over at Anzio Landing restaurant, but the light was really bad at that point and I didn't get a shot. Three B-25s at one airport... I'm in love.

So that's the trip... Lil is close to getting a job, and now the only thing left is to find me a job there. I did some scouting at Scottsdale Airport and there seems to be quite a bit of activity out there in the way of corporate and business aviation. I have a background in that area and my Bachelor degree was focused on that. I have the historic aircraft operations background with CF for the five years I worked there and now have Public Relations and Marketing experience in aviation through CF and the Associate Director of Marketing position I hold now.

Soooo... if anyone has any leads or thoughts, please let me know! I know some of you have already written back previously, and I appreciate the help!

Oh yeah, here's Lil and I at Superstition Mountain...
Image

Later ya'll,
Ryan

Hello Ryan. glad the trip was such a success for both you and your wife.... I know you said the move is related to Lil's work as a teacher,...... but are you SURE about that???????? Too many toys in the hangers around that area....... I'm sure both Matt and Chris would be more than happy to help you out..... On the question of the CAF B-25 follow the link here..... It should be flying very soon......... I also said that last year. Alan
The two new pics also have Winter 2007 as part of the caption.... http://www.arizonawingcaf.com/pages/restoration.html

IIRC that airframe was used as a maintenance trainer for battle damage, sorry the correct term escapes me at the moment.

Ryan, I’ve sending some contact info for some folks out in Phoenix to your inbox.

Almost every plane in those pics have a rudder missing. Just seemed strange to me.

Ryan,

The F-8s have been discussed before here and also in the previous warbirds forum; although I don't recall the details, I believe "Thunder Aviation" was the name of the company that had them for sale as far back as 2000.

Saludos,

Tulio

Sorry I missed you Ryan, but those are not F-8s, they are A-7s.

The Crusaders were operated by Thunderbird Aviation and are now with Paul Allen if memory serves. If you look closely at Ryan's pic you will notice there are actually 2 A-7's in storage at Glendale.

Hey Matt, my brother was enjoying his lunch out at Buckeye airport last week and was pretty excited at the arrival of the A-26 and A-1. What's up? Are they at Buckeye to receive paint per chance? C'mon, spill the beans!

Hans is being kicked out of glendale because he did not get the building up in the time the lease said it had to be done, so all the planes will be moved.

Did the airport grant him some sort of offer of land for the hangar and he just didn't have the funding available at the time? Or do they have some sort of requirement for aircraft of that size and condition to be under some sort of cover? Sounds like a raw deal whatever it was... especially since the location of a possible museum at the airport would have been more of an asset to the area if anything. I mean, yeah, the stadium and Cabelas are nice, but not everyone is up for pigskin and fishing...

What is the plan now? Will the collection be relocated temporarily until some sort of museum plan is established?

One of the two A-7s is A-7A 153241, which I think came from Newton City KS. Does anyone know the identity of the other one please?
Regards,
Andy Marden

I'm curious about that Harpoon myself. It looks like it hasn't moved much from when I saw it parked outside the CAF hangar almost three years ago. The CAF guys told us it was privately owned.

Here's a pic taken in August of '04. I think that one should be the poster child of how NOT to paint a warbird!
