Anybody have any idea what airplane this was, who owned it, and subsequent history?

Photographed in Chino in 1979.

No clue on who's P-38 that is, but I wonder what's the story on the unpainted B-24 in the second photo.

It was the Tallichet airplane from India, which was turning up at airshows out West quite a bit at the time.

That may be either the P38 that crashed in Utah, that was on Baa Baa Black Sheep, but most likely the Tallichet airplane that ended up at McGuire AfB on a pole, in a trade for C130's, although if is that one, the paint it had in 77 is gone.

I have no numbers on the airplane -- I take pictures, but I'm not very good about N numbers and things. I'm more of an "ooh pretty!" kind of guy than a systematic recorder of anything.

Weren't Bu Numbers on Navy planes anyway?

I don't remember ever seeing Bill Ross's aircraft but my impression is that it was much prettier than this rather scruffy example...

Definitely not the Bill Ross machine as he acquired his P-38 in '69 and it certainly was looking much better than this ten years later. I don't know for sure but I would hazard a guess that it is either the Tallichet bird that ended up on a pole as "Marge" or the other one he had that was also painted up as "Marge".

The B-24 is Talichet's "Joe". Kermit has it FOF in FL right now. I saw it last week during SnF. Never could find Bill Greenwood (got many good shots of the Spit though).

Defintely not the Ross machine. His P-38 was at DuPage airport outside of Chicago in '79 and sported the Derschel...(sorry, my German fails me, but it translated to "revenege weapon) painted on the nose.

It's definitely not the ex Tallichet now Mcguire AFB machine, it still had the same paint it did in 77 in 1981. N6961 is the one destroyed in Salt Lake City that was in Baa Black Sheep, Scrap Iron IV and it did look like this on the show. Tallichet acquired N505MH in 79, so it probably is either N6961 or N505MH. Tallichet's N79123 was acquired from Jack Hardwick, non flying in the early 80s. Then there's the rumour that the paperwork of N505MH was swapped with N79123, but will leave that out for this discussion. This is all from Kevin Grantham's book, Pscreamers.

As a total aside, I like that book -- it's got a bunch of my pictures in it!
