Hello,

I post here some informations from a post on a french spoken forum.

This blade was discovered a few weeks ago in the ground of a field near Caen in Normandy (no far from the beach of the D-Day)

It's in aluminium and it's hollow. It's length is 1,85 meter, approximate 6 feet.

We looks like to find information about the type of the propeler, and perhaps the differents engines and the aircrafts types, who use this sort of propeler during WWII.

Any help or comments will be very appreciate.

Bests regards

Iclo

Iclo,

To me it looks like a P-38 blade as well. I would like to suggest to post it at http://www.armyairforces.com/
Maybe you know the exact finding spot. There a a lot of French members who might have the solution on a possible date and a/c for you.

Regards,

Paul

Iclo,
The prop blade is a Curtiss Electric and could have been used on the A-36, P-51A, P-40 or the P-38. The drawing number was stenciled on the front side of the blade as well as stamped on the butt of the blade. Clean the blade gently to reveal the drawing number and I can supply the aircraft type that the blade was installed on originally.

Regards,

Jay

Further to Jay's comments, the B-26 Marauder also used the Curtiss Electric.

Yup. I'm leaning more towards a P-47 blade. From America's hundred thousand:

Quote:
Early P-47 versions used the Curtiss Electric four blade 12 foot 2 inch diameter C642S propellor with 714-1C2-12 design hollow steel blades.
Later P-47D aircraft used either the Curtis Electric four blade C642S propellor with design 836 hollow steel blades in 13 feet diameter or a Hamilton Standard four blade Hydromatic 24E60 propellor with model 6507-2 blades in 13 feet diameter

The P-38 props were Curtiss Electric C532D blades at 11'6" diameter. If this blade is 6 feet long that might rule the '38 out. What's the diameter of a marauder prop? Most of them I've seen in pictures have cuffs though...

Tanks everybody for your comments, your help is very appreciated.

Jay, I'm sending your suggestion to the people who takes the pictures and who has access to the blade, to find this serial number

You can rule-out the P-47, C-46 and the B-26 Maruader using the Curtiss Electric blade. All of these aircraft used the hollow steel blade and the diameter was larger than the P-38, P-40 and Etc.

Jay
