Warbird Information Exchange

Well from my point of view, I'm a big guy and I like my space. Several years ago I got the chance to go aboard "Strawberry Bitch" and "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby" at the USAFM back to back. I went on the B-17 first then the B-24 and for me it was a night and day difference. Compared to the Fortress the Liberator seems nice and roomy. I cast my vote for the B-24. The most cramped I have ever been was in the museum's ME 262. Obiviously not mean't for tall pilots.

I would choose the B-24. First, the rarity of the B-24 scores big points with me, and the extra room is nothing to sneeze at when your my size. I've had no trouble passing through the bomb bay of either the B-17 or B-24, but never with the aircraft moving. I had the opportunity to ride on a B-17 this summer, but instead chose to support the local CAF unit by riding on my favorite B-25. Perhaps next summer I'll ride on a B-17, unless the Collings Foundation comes to town, then it'll be the B-24, no question about it.

I would definately go for the B-24 too.... Just think it would be a more interesting experience. I've been on two B-17 rides, and I would have given both of them up for one ride in a B-24.

I don't think either would be as cramped as the B-25. I'm pretty skinny, and I had a heck of a time fitting between the fuselage and the wing when I rode in Old Glory. Makes me admire those boys in WWII that much more.

During the YAF show I had the pleasure of going for a ride in Yankee Lady. I found it to be a blast (my first B-17 ride) , but had a little trouble squeezing through the bomb bay area at 6'4" and 250 lbs. Mind you, I'm not complaining. I've never been in a 24 before, but as the others mention, I would also do the B-24/LB-30, due to the rarity of the type..........

Heh, everyone suggests the B-24 so naturally I chose the B-17. I've been in side both and found the B-17 easier to move around in and in general I just love B-17's way more than B-24's so it really wasn't a hard descision. I will be getting my ride a week from Sunday in Nashua. I decided against Portland but a big one is the weather debris from Ivan will be hitting the area this weekend and I figured I'd have a shot at better weather next week. I'm so looking forward to this. It will not only be my first warbird ride but my first airplane ride in something other than an airliner.

Scott, I would go for the -24 myself. I have been in a few -17's and they are my choice, but I'm looking forward to getting a ride in the -24. I went through it when it was @ KADS last year and sat in the left seat. Its big and would make a great photo platform.

I think Scott needs to set an example to others as a lesson in humility to all of us. I think he should donate the ride to a deserving charity like the Parker home for tired and emotional public servants, I will be happy to handle all the paperwork for you and administer who gets the ride etc - only too happy tp help- I would pick the 24 as we operated them here and I think they are cool

I've rode in both of the Collings birds, The 24 rocks. The open waist guns are the best! I was able to lean way out and shoot pictures forward. Very cool. My avatar is from that ride, look familiar?

On the basis of rarity alone I would go with the B-24.

If I never had the chance to fly on a B-17, I would definately choose the Flying Fortress! Since I took to the skies in Aluminum Overcast 9 years ago however now I would choose the Liberator.

never having flown in either a B17 or a B24 I'd accept either one. But, by preference, simply for the aussie connection and the fact there are so few active, I'd have to take the B24 if there both available but only one trip I can take.
