Rod Lewis is getting an A-20!

Fri Dec 03, 2010 2:01 pm

Perhaps I'm the last person in the civilized world to learn of this (wouldn't surprise me), but. . . :x

I just read in the new Air Classics that Rod Lewis is getting an A-20 Havoc! 8) COOL!!! Aero Trader is doing the restoration work, and it sounds like they are going to do a high-quality job on it, including installation of the top turret. It's been a LONG time since I've seen an A-20 (there was one at the Breckenridge air show back in the late 1980s or early 1990s, if memory serves). I really like A-20s, so I'm pretty stoked about this! :D

Sorry if this is old news, but nobody tells me anything around here. :(

Dean the A-20 fan!

Is this the same airframe that was originally due to go to Australia, and has been with Aero Trader for a while?

Yes, that's the one. I don't have the magazine here at work, so I don't have the N-number or USAAF s/n handy.

Wow, that's fantastic! No offense to our antipodeans, but I'm glad that aircraft is staying here. You guys down under already have enough Bostons/Havocs ! :)

I remember seeing that aircraft fly in the 70's at Airsho in Harlingen back when Willie Farrah owned it. Somewhere in my archives I have a picture of an A-20 flight with that aircraft in formation with the CAF's.

It will be nice to see any A-20 fly since there are currently none.

Exciting times! I wonder if he's going to race it at Reno? Can you imagine two Tigercats and an A-20 going around the pylons? On second thought, I hope he doesn't race it, it's too rare.

It was discussed here on WIX a few weeks back. Here is what I have on it...

Mr. Lewis also has four F8F Bearcats in his collection!!! This includes Rare Bear.

Is the collection viewable by the public? If so where is it displayed?

His collection is viewable by the public only when it is displayed at airshows. The planes are scattered throughout the States, but most of his collection is in private hangars in the San Antonio area. Rumor is he is looking for one central location to build a public museum.

Lets hope this happens sooner rather than later!

Speaking of A-20's, did we get any answer on where the 2 or 3 A-20's down at Precision are going? We know one is being kept by Murray, but what about the other one or two? Where are they going? We know one is NOT going to Yagen.

one has gone to the raf museum at hendon not sure on the others though yagen was mentioned in the aviation press when Murray got them, why do you say that he's not getting one?

Awesome! The Havoc is one of my favorite warbirds..maybe I'll get so see one fly after all.

I notice this aircraft is listed as an A-20J. Does anyone know if it'll be restored with the glass nose, or keep its current "G" gun nose? Either one is fine with me..it'll just be good to see an A-20 in the skies again!

Because it's been confirmed in a previous thread here.

Are you sure it's confirmed? Reading through that previous thread didn't clear it up for me for certain, although it did sound likely that the A-20 had gone on to another owner.

Cheers,
Richard

Edit: Just got direct confirmation that MAM do indeed own an A-20 at Precision, but no work has been made on the project as of yet.
