Some latest news on Pacificwrecks.com. Reported as a B-17F "Pluto" has been discovered off Cape York.

I f you read the article it says NOT a B-17F (as initially believed) but may be C-47 or C-49

Looks like the retracts are douglas style. Also photo of pluto has smooth tires and the one on the wreck has tread but they could have been changed.

That closeup showing the landing gear strut with the lightening holes is definately a Gooney Bird. The engine also appears to be too small in diameter for a Wright R-1820 (but just right for a P&W R-1830.) Can't tell for sure, but the one minus cowl appears to be a twin-row, which no B-17 ever used.

So this is either a 4-engined C-47 or a B-17 with those extremely rare 7-cylinder R-1820s? :lol:
