I have inherited a collection of aircraft photographs. I'm looking into if I can post them or not. legal stuff......I'm not sure how that works.

easy rule of thumb is if they're government photos you can do whatever you want with them, including mail them to me.

If they were shot by a private photog, you need permission.


there are other rules but those should get you by

That Duck photo (nice) looks to be government...others here would know a great deal more than I do tho

As far as your photos are concerned, you say you inherited them. Is the person who you inherited them from still living? If so and they are his personal photgraphs then you should get permission. If the person is not living and you were given the photographs without strings, the it is my understanding that you are free to share them..If they are US gov't photos then share as you want.

I inherited a collection of photos and the family gave them to me free of restrictions as if they were mine...I always credit the photographer but they are now mine.

Nice photo! If you know who took it, always, always list that with the photograph (preferably on it). In your case, these images might be unique survivors, and the copyright often falls to the owner of the unique print (if no photographer is known). Otherwise, I don't think it really matters... it certainly doesn't stop anyone else from posting them. The image size on the web is usually so small that it wouldn't matter anyway as they are far too small for publication. I say this as a professional photographer.

Speaking of Ducks...does anyone have photos of when Frank Tallman was flying acro in one? One of the first memories I have from the Reno Air Races was watching him (at least I think it was him) flying an entire airshow routine in one, back in 1976 or so.

First off, Thanks guys for the advice I spoke to the Cradle of Aviation Museum people this morning and they said it was ok to use anything that might have came from them. I have one more call to make on Monday. As near as I can tell I have about 7000 pictures in the tiff format, lots are of people making airplanes but the majority are of planes....anyway I need to get permission to use them as I don't want lawyers knocking on my door, could that happen? BTW all of these came from my friend Leo Polaski he spent many days scanning photographs of Long Island Aviation

I don't think you have anything at all to worry about with respect to this. If anyone seriously disapproves of these images being used, they will simply ask you to remove them from the web. Lawyers are not going to worry about going after you for posting some low-res images of a few old photos of aeroplanes... honestly, they won't. I wouldn't have any hesitation about posting an old photograph of the vintage you have been posting.

I agree. The worst they will do is email you and ask you to remove the image. If you were using them for print purposes, you would need to do more verification. I'm saying that as an ex newsy who has had to deal with it before. In general the laws and consequences are made to sound scary in order to prevent individuals from abusing them on a large scale. No one will blink if a minor mistake is made once on the internet.

Very beautiful shots by the way. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast I have an affinity for aquatic aviation
