Warbird Information Exchange

Just got back from the local airport. This is where I will be taking my flight lessons. Some interesting activity was going on while I was there. The Cessna 152 was up giving lessons. They were making touch-and-goes. I must say some were not so great. Including a few landing aborts! But I enjoyed watching them. I took a few shots of the one hanger before they started pulling the aircraft out. They got one ready and it took off. I am not sure what kind it was. It was a twin engine. Pretty nice plane(I am not up on my civil aircraft like I am on my warbirds. ). It's a nice little airport and has been recently upgraded. New hangers, new pavement, taxi ways, longer runway, ect. Most of the planes are kept inside long red sheds.

This is the new hanger where they house the "charter" aircraft and office.

Aircraft just pulled out. The one in the middle is the one that started up and took off. Anyone know what kind it is?

Piper Aerostar.
Fast little machine.
Jimmy Franklin used to do a full airshow routine in one.

Aerostar was designed by Ted Smith who also designed the Aero Commanders, Jet Commander and, if I'm not mistaken, may also have been involved in the design of the A-26 Invader. There is a certain resemblance anyway! One of the best looking light twins!

Aerostar....AKA Twin Engine Doctor Killer

At one time, wasn't the Aerostar the fastest piston engine civilian airplane?

I'm sure there are folks here that know more about this, but I think that the 700 hp version of the Aerostar is still the fastest GA twin.
As far as the fastest civilian piston ever, that would be interesting to find out. Could you consider the Schneider Cup aircraft civilian? The big
Gee Bee's would be. Don't think it would be fair to count drastically modified Reno racers.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what the title was, just that it did hold a record. Back in my line service days, I used to refuel one alot. They are cool airplanes. Just remember that just because some doctors that have no business flying the thing wreck some don't make it a bad airplane.

One of the simple things in life to enjoy..... going to the local airport and watch the planes. Glad you had an enjoyable day. Looks like the Applachians in the background or maybe the Ozarks???

I think Ted Smith was involved with the Martin B-26 Marauder.
He like the "big airplane systems" , thats why the Aerostar has elecotro hydraulic steering and electro operated fuel valves and such. At least that's what I've been told. Maintenance on the Aerostars is a pain, I know. That twin turbo, pressurized version is even worse. Always liked the looks of the twin Commander, though, the 640's. Left side of photo 3.

After an Aerostar has the Christy modifications performed and then our windshield installed, it looks good AND flies fast.

Yep, thats what they are. Here in Northeast Pennsylvania. Good call! Too bad mustangdriver doesn't live closer. We would have a good ol' time taking about planes!

Well, what do you know! The National Warplane Museum is only less then an hour from me! A relative of mine is getting married there soon. I plan on giving EVERYONE a tour of the place! And if you really feel ambitious we can go to Geneseo too! It's on the same road just head north.

I am starting a new job and my only time off will be the weekends. But if your thinking what I am thinking, then maybe we should meet up and start our very own WIX warbird quest!
