Patton's Stinson 105

Tue Dec 07, 2004 1:00 am

It seems that George S. Patton bought a Stinson 105 and re-learned how to fly in 1940 while doing maneuvers in Georgia.

So does anybody claim ownership of this aircraft? Has it been tracked? Is it restored? Curious!

Thanx FF..I never knew that history of Patton. Stinsons are fairly well documented...this could be an interesting "dig" for pertinent details.

Stinson L5's and 105's

Tue Dec 07, 2004 9:23 am

L5's are well documented, but 105's are not as there were very few made and they were consumed by CAP and 1950's deterioration. When I checked on the FAA registry, there are no 105's listed by Stinson, 105, or Voyager. Some of the Stinson 10's might actually be 105's, but I don't know enough about the type to tell which is which, and the FAA data base wouldn't tell me much. Does the FAA still have records of sales back that far (1940)? If they do, that might be a way to track down the aircraft.

The Stinson 105s are listed at HW-75s on the FAA database. A while back I came across a neat page that purpored to list all the surviving Stinson HW-75/105s but I can't find it right now.

This Stinson is metnioned several times in Paul Tibbets' book, as he was one of "ol blood and guts'" first personal pilots. Patton wanted an airplane to observe his tank crew's training, the Army would not allocate one to him, so he bought his own.
Quite a star crossed life for a kid from Iowa....

If Mr Tibbits flew the A/C in question would not he possablitly have some info on the a/c in a log book or something?

Just an idea.

We get stuff done in spite of ourselves...

You know, in looking on the web about this, I saw that Tibbets flew with him but I never would have thought to look for his log books. I like how things like this come together. Now, who has Paul Tibbetts log books?

Good question John, I'll ask him for you! Will let ya know what he says--and if he has any pertinent information, I'll hold it as ransom in exchange for one B-29 accumulator!

turnabout

...B29Gnner...can we assume for documentation purposes..that FF found
yer turret rollers ???..and it's onward to an accumulator, now ?

ps,
WOW!!!....fast "dig"!!!!

I'm good but I'm not that good...

...And you know how hard it is to find X-mas gifts for coon dogs? You have to keep them happy, or their particular warbird part sniffing powers seem to lag. And I really need an infusion of about 2000 lbs or so of parts. The rest of the pile is getting lonely...

No turret rollers yet, but I did find a box of NOS feed pawl springs for 20mm cannons.

Trevor, if you get any information, just picture that accumulator with a Remington 870 duct taped to its thinnest wall... and bargain accordingly!

Did anything come of this?

great thread. yeah, patton bucked the system & bought his own plane. he was 1 of the wealthiest men in the u.s. army, i'm curious as to the results of everybody's search efforts.

I know it is an old thread but...

My great uncle served in North Africa from 42-44...He mentioned that one time he was travelling in a convoy when an L-bird landed nearby and pilot ran over and asked for some gas. The soldiers told him no and he ran back to the plane. The pilot told this to whoever was in the plane with him and out came General Patton. Needless to say they got their gas and headed on their way. My uncle says he remembers seeing Pattons pearl handled pistol on his belt.
