Hangar 25

In the wee hours of the morning (0930) yesterday (Monday) I stopped at the Hangar 25 museum in Big Spring [had mistakenly identified the location as Breckenridge], TX just to find that it is closed on Mondays . . . Managed to see the Harrier outside, and through the windows, the T-33, T-37, T-28, AT-11 inside. Next time I'll make sure to visit on a day other than Monday.

Yup, Big Spring it was . . . what was I thinking? I would have stopped again and say hello to you in B'ridge!

Tulio - At least you found it. My wife, our son and I decided to drive most of old Route 66 for our vacation this summer. Sunday before last, we swung down to I20 to see the CAF. As we approached Big Spring, coming from the east, we saw the exit for the airport, so I thought we would visit Hanger 25. We followed a road for miles, seeing one sign saying airport was ahead. We finally arrived at a dead-end, and had to go right or left. There was no sign about the airport, and the area looked pretty rough. We took a right, went through the middle of town (completely deserted) and got back on I20. The CAF was the main reason we were down on I20, so we headed on to Midland. I thought Saturdays and Sundays were the big days for air museums, so was really disappointed that the CAF was closed. I really wanted to meet Gary and Scott and see the Lib, but I guess it just wasn't in the cards.

Had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. My girlfreind and I decided that this year's vacation would be a tour of aiviation museums in Ontario. We got into Toronto Monday night, with our first planned stop the Toronto Aviation Museum, but a closer look at the printout from their website showed they're closed on Tuesday! No biggie, we just rearranged our itinerary and stopped there on our way home.

Even with their large land extension, airports some times are difficult to find; poor signage is one of the most common problems that I encounter on my travels.

The sign for the Big Spring airport, is on the feeder road heading North-East.

The sign for the museum only says "Hangar 25" and unless you are a local, an aficionado or a member of the museum, you will never guess the significance of this sign.

I decided to follow the road to Hangar 25, because I did not remember the name for the museum. Once I drove to what used to be the hard standing for training aircraft -now populated by 18 wheeles and box trailers- and saw the USMC Harrier, I knew that I was onto something.

Google Earth has been of great help for my pre-trip planning, so that at least I can have a general idea of an airport location relative to a town or a city.

I am sorry that you missed meeting Gary in Midland; he is surely one of the nicest guys in "this here bidness"
