Hey Mahaffey-
Are you guys taking Chuckie to any airshows this year? Maybe Midland?

Chuckie seems to have become the "Forgotten Fort" among flying examples. The last time many people saw her was when she went all the way up for the Thunder show. Since then it seems you guys have kept a low profile.

It just seems that Chuckie isn’t in the public eye as much as other examples such as 909, Yankee Lady, and Memphis Belle. Is it because of operating costs that we don’t get to see this awesome looking B-17? Also, how long has this B-17 been flying in its current state? I remember the famous shot of the 4 Forts in tight formation that was taken in the 80's if I’m not mistaken. I believe Chuckie, Texas Raiders (no chin turret), Aluminum Overcast, and the last one escapes me, were all flying tight formation.

Anyways, awesome looking Fortress and I hope we see you guys start to fly her more nationally. At least that would be my hope.

Chris

It was Oshkosh 1981, the 4th one was Sentimental Journey, and Budd Davisson shot the photo from a T-28. We on the ground were hoping for a pass by the foursome but Chuckie proceeded on home so we only got a 3-ship. It was a dawn flight, and it was quite something to be in the middle of them at that hour when they started up.

If the Skyraider was a broad, she would be a full figured on at that!

We had a neat little airshow in Chilliwack, BC this past Sunday and we were greeted with a wonderful aerial display by a Skyraider from the aviation museum in Bellingham. I Forget the exact name of the museum. Regardless, the show he put on in the Skyraider was wonderful with low and fast fly pasts. I'd never really appreciated the airplane until I saw it a few days ago.

Quite a nice airplane.

Cheers,

David

Hey August--

That early-AM Fort flight...was that the occasion on which you were watching the vet watch the Forts take off? Always found that story haunting in its simplicity...

I think maybe I'll start a "Lump-In-Throat Airshow Moments" thread. Must be loads of those stories on here.

Now that's funny...but Gary is alot like the Skyraider, "stout", almost always covered in oil, and gets the job done, regardless of obstacles.
