Provenance Fighter Sales just recently sold the ex Tillamook Air Museum composite static display P-51D. Does anyone know what the asking price was,or maybe even who bought it? The following photo is courtesy of Curtis Fowles at MustangsMustangs

Is that composite as in "made of of real Mustang parts from various sources" or as in "made of up non flyable parts to look like a real Mustang"?

As far as I know from some of my friends who saw it in Oregon the majority of it was real mustang parts.The spinner and prop were fiberglass according to the Provenance Fighter Sales website. Also, it was a completely empty shell in the cockpit and in the wheel wells. A great start for a restoration to airworthy!

That thing was so bad it had to be seen to believed.
Ted Ryder, the head mech for Erickson, told me they bought it for the paperwork to get the Aussie Mustang into Standard and were going to mount this thing on a pole out front. A majority of the structure, he said, was poprivited together and probably would have came apart if they had mounted it.

Yeah, it was completely gutted and kind of cobbled together. Pretty pricey, too. Probably be a starting point for a complete ($$$) restoration project if you had lots of other parts to go with it.
