Bad crash at Reno air races

Wed Sep 12, 2007 4:19 am

From a freind sadly on the spot... lucky wasnt a warbird but shame and sad to see someone die.

"Today at the Reno Air Races there was a Fatal Aircraft
accident.

One of the Sport Biplanes was taking off, and started
trailing smoke. I watched as he attempted to return to the
field making a left bank. He continued to bake and stalled,
crashing into the ground approx 60 feet off the runway.

I started running to the crash site and noticed that I was
to only one running, and yelled am I tho only one who is
going to help him. Then several otheres started out, to
render aid. There were about 10-20 people who beat me to the
site (old and not in very good shape). I noticed they were
not making a headway getting the canopy open, and crossed to
the oter side and with the help of one other forced the
canopy open. There was a doctor already on scene who
pronounced the pilot dead.

I then took charge and cleard the scene to preserve evidance
and located witness to the accident.

I see dead people at work all the time. But this is a site that no doubt will
remain in my mind for all time (The pilot in the seat, no
helmet, a blank stare, and blood in the cockpit), (The
helmet came off in the crash) ."
