My favorite bomber has always been the B-17 as my Dad was a 50-mission B-17 veteran. He flew for the Forest Service and BLM many years including the three-year period 1971-1973 though not in fire bombers. On July 12th of each of those years a B-17 went down:

July 12, 1971 Tucson N9324Z

July 12, 1972 Socorro N73648

July 12, 1973 Eureka, NV N620L

The worst part for me was that my Dad came home with the news each time to ruin a special day for me...July 12 is my birthday!

I guess fate was kind that he had no B-17 combat mission on July 12, 1943. His second mission was on 10 July and his third was 16 July that year.

Thanks for the help....but pretty sure it was a parent company B-17 that went down in Silver City...This could be the Socorro crash....but anyway, has anyone been to the crash site?
