3 Injured When Small Plane, Car Collide
Car Crosses Private Runway, Officials Say

SAN ANTONIO -- Three people were injured Saturday when a small plane and a car collided at Old Boerne Airfield in northwest Bexar County, a Bexar County sheriff's officer said.

The collision happened when a woman who lives just off the airfield pulled out of her driveway and onto the runway, right into the path of a small plane preparing for take-off, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old woman, and the 54-year-old pilot and were airlifted to area hospitals.

A passenger in the vehicle, the 6-year-old son of the driver, was taken to a local hospital by a family member, officers said.

"All three were taken to University Hospital, 2 of them being airlifted. But there conditions are good at this time," Sgt. Tom Ackeroyd, of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, said.

The immediate condition of the accident victims was unknown.

The war replica kit plane appears to have T-boned the car, officials said. Witnesses said the driver was distracted while driving with her son.

The collision left both the car and the aircraft in a tangled mess.

Because the collision happened on an airfield and involved an airplane, the Federal Aviation Association said it is investigating, but flight rules governing car traffic say all vehicles must yield to aircrafts on the runway.

Looks like an RV-8 to me. Had wheel pants anyhow.

The woman driving the car was the daughter of the guy who owned the airfield...

Not quite right DB2 but close enough. The plane was a brand new RV-8 and painted in Red Tail P-51 colors. Would probably have been an Oshkosh winner. Happened right in front of my hangar. Good news is that there were no life threating injuries, but bad enough anyway. Both should be home in a couple of days. Can't believe it made state and national news.

Glad to hear they will both be OK. I had heard about it from neighbor, who had just returned from San Antonio (he owns some property close by).

Must've been a slow news day. A shame about the plane. Re: the comment about the driver...was really thinking more that if it was all "in-the-family", there won't be some ridiculous lawsuit materialize as a result of the accident.
