Hi everybody,

I just stole this link off of a post over on the PBY board, and I hope it works over here.

Looking at the photos makes you VERY thankful that no one was hurt, and that some of the birds were able to be saved. Wow!

I know it is probably an optical illusion, but the B-17 looks awfully close to the fire. I can't imagine the heat that the fire was giving off.

The scary thing about this, is that I have just finished the latest Classic Wings

There is an article on the Wings over Michigan airshow, obviously written before this event which says:

'funds raised will be used to help pay for a 1930's hanagr which is considered a "fire risk" :shock:

Wow. Those are some riveting shots. Some of them of course remind me of pix taken at Mt.Hope 11 years ago. I hope someone who witnessed this horrendous event can recap it in print--particularly so proper credit can go to those who hauled out whatever they could. 11 years ago, pure happenstance saved CWH's priceless Lancaster (behind a cinderblock wall erected for a paintshop)...that fire happened in the small hours of a winter morning with no one on site to do anything about the aircraft. This time, though, it was courage rather than chance that saved three historic aircraft for posterity. Hats off to YAF. See you at "Yankee" next August...

the fire at CWH was dicovered when a person showed early for work, at this time the fire was confined to the offices. The volunteer fire department, when they arrived would not go inside or allow anyone to go in and open the doors, so nothing was taken out. I do not remember the time span from discovery to the roof collaspsing, but I think it was less than 1/2 hr; and yes if it were not for the cinderblock wall, from the hangar's former days as a paint shop the whole hanger including the Lanc would have been gone.

I would not trade a life for those a/c. Even as beautiful as they where. I miss seeing them around.
