I'm not 100% sure what Tim is talking about but I know MAPS is getting the A-7E from the Intrepid. We may also get the short nose Tiger, but it is not in the condition the Navy thought it was in (turns out it is a stripped hulk), so that one is still in the air. The Whale is going as well...I think to a city in New York state. Story I heard is that they want to open up room to put the Concorde on the deck.

That just doesn't seem right. Kind of like rebuilding London Bridge in the desert, but I heard that went over well. Still seems silly and out of place.

Well, at least the are honoring a "Real American Hero"! Apparently they couldn't find a candidate more worthy than a G.I. Joe doll.

Was there in February, a Destroyer had to be removed
so the Concord could take it's place. My understanding
was they were to build a structure next to the Intrepid so
the Concord could be toured.

I'd rather see it full than empty. as for having to now travel dozens of miles to see the same aircraft that were available in the one spot... nup, doesn't help in my book but it does let people from those areas see the aircraft, even if one at a time.

I saw that the Navy took back the USS Edson (the Forrest Sherman class destroyer), but there was no mention of the reason why the ship was gone.

I like the Concorde. I recall driving south on Route 28 in Virginia, which parallels one of Dulles' runways when I heard the loudest roar. As I looked to my right, the Concorde was lifting off right next to me, afterburners blasting. That was impressive! I also unwittingly witnessed it's final North American flight, I was leaving my office, heard the sound of what I thought was a military jet, looked up, and it was there. As impressive as the Concorde is, removing a destroyer to make room for it doesn't seem right.

The Edson is currently on donation hold looking for another home. Another Forrest Sherman class destroyer (the Forrest Sherman itself) is awaiting funding for restoration and transport to its new home in Baltimore. I believe the funds are set aside in the latest Defense Appropriations bill.

They seem to be getting rid of most of the Navy Aircraft. The A3D is being shipped to some Upstate town to rot away and be vandalized.

Also has anyone toured the ship? No crew areas were opened. They added that glass viewing area under the round down. They hanger was carpeted if I remember right. They are slowing converting an aircraft carrier into a convention center or something. All the ladder wells have been converted to staircases. One I can understand But everyone you can use is that way.

I knew someone who worked there several years ago and said that they really didn’t care too much about the aircraft they had (maybe why they need a position filled http://www.wingsofeagles.com/ ). It just a shame that it is not kept in a living ship condition like the USS Hornet, USS Yorktown and USS Lexington. I have yet to be to the USS Midway so I can’t say anything about that museum. Its like they are turning the ship into a Martini table or something. It just really bothers me.

I went to visit the Intrepid last December, and noticed it was turning into an amusement park. Climbing walls, simulators, movies, games... Oh and the replica Helldiver with car tires, and then there's the replica Hellcat... Most of the ship was closed off to the public, there was very little besides the hangar deck and the bridge that was open to the public. And then there's all the aircraft on the flight deck. Most were in need of some serious attention. I was dissapointed.

Upon leaving, there was a line of about 200+ people waiting to get in...WHAT??? I guess if people are willing to paying to see this, the USS Intrepid will keep morphing into an amusement park rather than protraying history of the proud warship she is.

Just a little perspective to the size of this very historic warship.
