A good friend of mine Colonel Joe Edmonds Ret. USMC 54-82 was a pilot, and mentored unde Gen Carl. Col Joe could tell some interesting stories about Marion Carl. Gen Carl would take any wing aircraft available and take off (they thought he went hunting or fishing--they did not ask) The airplanes would come back with weeds in the wheel wells. He would set them down anywhere he could.
He was killed a few years back by a home intruder. Col Joe says " Gen Carl was almost deaf, and the intruder probably slipped up on him". What a shame! He was, and is, a Marine Corp legand.

Not correct.
A drug addict broke into his and edna's house and was going to shot her.
Has he pulled the trigger Marion ran into the kitchen and jumped in front of Edna to protect her and died instantly from a 12 guage shotgun blast to the face.
That my friends is a true hero!!!

Didn't ever hear that part, Jack, Just remembering Col Joe's statement, and hearing on the news that he was killed by an intruder.

He had the speed record in the Douglas Sky Streak until Yeager broke the sound barrier. He was also the first Marine to fly a helicopter......

Some Nice stuff about him here at Arlington's website:

6/28/98, at age 82, he was killed defending Edna, his wife, from a home invader.

LtGen Carl's murderer, 19-year old Jesse Fanus, was apprehended one week after the killing. In April 1999, he was convicted on two counts of aggravated murder (and 11 additional felony charge) and sentenced to death. In 2003, his conviction and death sentence was upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court.
