Greetings All -

A couple of more scans from the Prairie Aviation Museum photos.

This first one is in England and the close up of the forward section of the wreckage may help. The stiffeners/ribbing across the flat sections of sheet metal may help someone ID it. I'm thinking a British aircraft but that's simply a guess.

This one is from the Pacific - I'm guessing a Japanese aircraft that was pushed/bulldozed off to the side of an airfield.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Hi,

First picture shows the rear end of a P-51, lying on her left side, with tail wheel doors partially open, and radiator door in front. Any chance to have a bigger scan, I would be interested?

You might be right for the second picture, it could be japanese.

Thanks for posting all those pictures.

Laurent

Could the Japanese airplane in the last photo have been a KI-84?

could be, but my gut tells me it was a twin engined type of some kind.

interesting pics, and I'd never had guessed P-51 for the first one; I hope the guy got out before that happened...

cheers

Hi All -

Thanks Laurent, like Greg, I would never have guessed a Mustang. Here's two close ups - I split it left/right since Photobucket will not send larger than 800x800.

As for the other photo, the prop hub and engine led me to think Japanese along with the idea that US Forces would cannibalize wrecks vs. 'dozing them off to the side. Somewhere around here I have scans of Ki84 drawings and will see if that might give an idea of what the engine, prop and cowling look like.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Mark,

It's definitely Japanese. I picked the Frank as a starting poing because of the four-blade prop, but there isn't enough of the cowling and cowl flaps showing to confirm it. The KI-67 bomber used four-blade props, and your photo could possibly show the remnants of one of those. The stuff just behind the engine looks like another motor mount and nacelle, so the twin engine idea may be correct.

Thanks for the close up. I had not noticed before that the bottom of the seat could be seen on the right side of the picture, still attached to the armor plate. No info on the picture such as date?

Thanks Laurent. No info with any of the photos except the bombing assessment images (which I've yet to scan and I'm not sure if I'll post them) which have a date and target name. One of those photos is interesting as it's not bombs but parcels being dropped over Holland.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Man, you are a truly P-51 connoisseur. I kept looking at the images and never figured out anything.
And to add a, maybe, useless remark I would say that the third image was taken somewhere in the Pacific because of the type of grass where the a/c is lying down.

That's my favorite plane, so I have no merit.

Maybe this picture will help you to figure it out, with some major parts missing....

Jack,

You could be right about that being a Jill in photo 3--I had forgotten they had four bladers also. I sure wish we could see more!

Just to add to the topic of that being a Mustang in the crash photo...I went out to the Mustang that's about twenty feet from my office right now (CAF's Red Nose) and looked at the inside of the radiator door. It also has those rows of stamped sections on the door for strength. That is definitely a Mustang in the photo.

I came across some good shots of them at American Aero Services P-51 restoration this morning.
