about the great generation pilots

Someone on an ealier post mestioned the fact that pilots in WWII possessed a unique skill for flying. Considering the pioneer days of flying when men/women tried to strive for the ultimate flying experiance.
This one story came to mind that my uncle Don told me. He said during his training in the Marine Air Corps that he witnessed a mock dogfight of P-26 Peashooters in sub zero winter weather-doing loops and rolls and every which way. He seemed amazed how those guys flew in that freezing cold weather in open cockpits!
He said those guys musta been freezing yet they still flew.
I guess to me it is just nice to know that at one point in time flying was an open adventerious experience. I am no sure how many people today would fly in a open cockpit in winter weather. Maybe a few but the hay day of flying will always amaze me.
