I have to agree with baldeagle, although the year of the photo makes me wonder, as this appears to be an early Stearman minus the elevator connecting arm on the front, and it still has a tail skid. By 1938 I would have thought they would have put a tail wheel on it.

I've sent this to my Stearman experts WTL and K. Wilson, to see if they can help.

No door at the front cockpit either, as I think they normally had, but the aileron pushrods sure say C-3. '38 was still pretty deep in the depression, wasn't it, so they may have been doing what they could with what they had, no tailwheel, etc.

BTW CB Head was KIA today 65 years ago on a B-25 escort over Rabaul :cry:
