Thanks!

Hi Paul,

The place with the largest listing I've ever seen is at www.aerofiles.com, unfortuantely, the number your looking for isn't in their massive list at: http://www.aerofiles.com/regs-home.html

Interestingly, the closest number to yours, was your favorite type, the BT-13.

You can look up current and some de-registered numbers at the FAA
site: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/

Don't type in the 'C' just the number. I've found many of the a/c my Dad flew in the 40's there.
Your number (without the C) was on a Maule which was destroyed in an aborted banner pick up in 1993. It doesn't show up on the NTSB database prior to that (back to about 1960) so chances are your a/c was destroyed or deregistered prior to that.

If the N-number has not been reassigned, any of the usual suspects will do. Just drop the "C" when searching. The "C" was never a part of an aircraft's unique ID (i.e., when NC56476 was active there could not be an active NX56476 or N56476 at the same time) so to most databases, NC56476 = N56476. I frequently find records of NC aircraft that way on the FAA site, ntsb.gov, airport-data.com, etc. when researching old photos.

Unfortunately, in this particular case N56476 was (re)assigned to a Maule from 1993-96, so the FAA search page (which only reports the most recent assignment of the N#) doesn't say anything about any previous assignments. The FAA must have data on the entire history of each N#, but it isn't available on their web database. Perhaps if you submitted one of the requests that is linked on their site, or wrote to them.

Paul
Another option for you is:
http://www.airport-data.com/

They often show expired N# along with the current.
The only problem is that it pulls data from the FAA.
Advantage: Some N#come with photos (old and new) of the aircraft.

And here is some stuff for others... as I am sure Paul already knows this.

For historic registrations try

http://www.goldenyears.ukf.net/reg_indexNAM.htm

I am afraid it only goes up to NC20999 so far
