This is from a strike camera in the belly of a b-26C of the 323rd Bg in 1945. I'm guessing a FW-190D.

Looks it to me, I'm guessing a D-9? Also note the Reich defense bands, maybe Jg 2 or 3 (did they fly 109D's?).

great pic!

cheers

Looking at the wing root guns,...I'd say a 190.

My vote goes to the 190. Note the square tip of the wings and horizontal stabilizer. All my drawings indicate the 109 had rounder tips on both.

Definitely a 190, and I'd imagine that pilot is in the middle of a good pantspooping, depending on the position of those bombs relative to his aircraft.

Come on guys you're disappointing me :? Yes, it's a FW-190 but radial or inline??? A D-9 or possibly a TA-152.
That don't look like no radial engined plain jane FW-190 to me

Jack

OK, it is definitely a Fw 190, and a D model at that. I'm no experten, but the camo & markings look earlyish to me (solid crosses, not the later outlines), so I'd say that it is a D-9, not a late D-11 or D-13. Also, the wing plan looks too stubby to be any of the Ta152 developments.

how's that?

cheers

greg v.

P.S. Defense bands put this at sometime around or after mid 1944, and if you squint it looks like this aircraft has the early non-blown canopy, but that's a bit of conjecture on my part...I'd say overall this is an early 190D-9, sometime in summer or fall of 1944, belonging to a unit which used a defense band either a solid light colour or a combination of light colours.

here's a link to some unit bands:

I'd say D-9 I believe the TA-152 had long wings for high altitude performance.

Early FW 190 D-9 Dora and deinetly not a TA 152, wings are too short.

Pretty cool shot, wonder what was going through his mind when he saw those!

My money is on the D-9

Can't be D-11, as it mounted four wing cannon. D-9 mounted two wing cannon (like example in photo) plus a pair of cowl machine guns.

It's possible that it may be D-13, but I believe only two or three are documented to have made it to the combat zone.

That same picture is in 'Osprey Aircraft of the Aces #9', 'Focke-wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Western Front'. It says that it was taken in December 1944 by B26 Marauders of the 9th AF. Its definately a Fw190 D, but what variant I dont have a clue. Maybe the date will help you experts.
