I didn't know where else to submit this post, so this thread will have to do for now.
I did a search on this site for Myron "Whitey" Sterngold, and came up empty. Whitey Sterngold was in the 322nd/450th and flew "Big Fat Mama Too." He and my father, Jim Farrell, met at Andrews Field in Great Saling and remained friends until Whitey's passing nearly 20 years ago.
I knew Whitey quite well. A finer gentleman you'll never find. Kind, generous, funny and successful, I always looked forward to being in his company.
Whitey was a champion wrestler at Lehigh University before WW II. After the war he went into his family's dress manufacturing business and made it much more successful than before he took over. He continued to fly for most of his life, both for business and pleasure. Whitey owned and operated several single and twin engine planes in the time that I knew him.
He was also a dog lover. He tried his hand at breeding German Shepherds for a while. My first pet as a kid, Fritz....a beautiful German Shepherd, came from a litter from one of Whitey's dogs. Whitey named his dogs alphabetically.....Alice, Barbara, Charlie......George is the last one I remember.
Here's a picture of Whitey with one of the 450th company dogs. He was a great guy and I know my father was deeply saddened when he lost his best friend. Another member of "the Greatest Generation."
If anyone has a picture of "Big Fat Mama Too" please post it.
